Free format text (please update) Subluminous O and B stars dominate the populations of faint blue stars and are found in both the old disk (field sdBs) and halo populations (globular cluster members) of our own Galaxy. Subluminous B stars are now generally believed to be extreme Horizontal Branch stars. However, the origin of sdB stars is unclear and strongly under debate. Evidence has accumulated recently that a large fraction (if not all) of the sdB stars in the field are found in binary systems. Both interacting binary and (non-interacting) single star evolutionary scenarios have been proposed for the origin of the sdB stars. If the first scenario is correct, all spectroscopic and/or photometric binaries containing sdBs need to have small separation of the order of 0.1 A.U. or less. In the non- interacting case the sdB binaries should have almost the same distribution of separations as found for normal stars, i.e. there should be mostly wide systems. We have compiled a list of 52 sdB binary systems from literature which are brighter than V=magpt150 and have spectroscopic distances between 200pc and 1500pc. We demonstrate that one third to one half of the sample should be resolvable on short exposure R-band PC images if the non-interacting evolutionary scenario holds. Almost none is expected in the alternative case. Hence a snapshot survey of 25 objects from the list will yield decisive constraints for the origin of sdB stars. Exposure times are short enough (1s to 10s) to allow to use gyro hold so that each snapshot observation can be done in 3 minutes. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose to take PC images of 25 sdB stars from the list of 52 brighter than V=magpt150 (see below) known to be spectroscopic or photometric binaries in order to possibly resolve the systems. We shall use a broad band R filter in which both components of the binary systems are estimated to be about equally bright. Exposure times (estimated from Table 2.2 of WFPC2 instrument handbook) are short: 10s or less which allows to drop guide star acquisition and use gyro hold. At a drift rate of 1.4+/-0.7 mas/s, the total drift will be well below half a PC pixel (46 mas) and, hence allows separations below 0sec point 1 to be measured. We are willing to waive proprietary data-rights. begintabularcccllll star & Alpha(1950) & Delta & V & type & l^II & b^II, PB 6107 & 0 39 31 &+ 4 53 17 &12.90 & sdB+K4& 118.60& -57.53, 01056+2736 & 1 5 32 &+27 36 53 &14.48 & sdB+K7& 127.46& -34.74, 01105+2611 & 1 10 31 &+26 11 37 &12.93 & sdB+K2& 128.97& -36.06, PHL 1079 & 1 35 48 &+ 3 23 0 &13.38 & sdB+? & 144.89& -57.12, PHL 3802 & 1 46 24 &-26 52 0 &12.35 & sdB+K0& 213.47& -77.23, 02053+1322 & 2 5 21 &+13 22 18 &14.76 & sdB+M3& 149.81& -45.13, 07496+6550 & 7 49 39 &+65 50 13 &12.14 & sdB+K5& 150.47& 31.08, 0942+461 & 9 42 2 &+46 08 38 &14.93 & sdB+? & 173.20& 48.95, TON 1281 & 10 40 57 &+23 24 55 &13.37 & sdB+K3& 213.80& 60.89, 10498+0119 & 10 49 54 &+ 1 19 32 &14.36 & sdB+K9& 250.44& 51.30, 1104+243 & 11 4 45 &+24 19 27 &11.56 & sdB+K3& 214.80& 66.39, 11041+0211 & 11 4 5 &+ 2 11 12 &11.82 & sdB+K2& 253.71& 54.36, LB 254 & 11 6 32 &+60 51 14 &14.9 & sdB+? & 143.21& 52.45, 11091-0702 & 11 9 4 &- 7 2 13 &14.16:& sdB+K2& 264.35& 47.85, 110607002 & 12 21 12 &+ 1 35 0 &12.80 & sdB+K0& 287.42& 63.24, LB 2392 & 12 32 27 &+50 3 42 &13.99 & sdB+K5& 129.87& 67.22, 081300002 & 13 10 36 &+15 56 0 &14.30 & sdB+K1& 327.50& 77.40, Feige 87 & 13 38 31 &+61 7 57 &11.72 & sdB+K4& 112.51& 55.35, 14215+3427 & 14 21 29 &+34 27 53 &14.85 & sdB+K3& 58.13& 69.05, 14496+6517 & 14 49 42 &+65 17 58 &13.65:& sdB+K4& 104.81& 47.73, 15114+6221 & 15 11 25 &+62 21 0 &14.42 & sdB+K5& 99.16& 48.05, 15147+0321 & 15 14 43 &+ 3 21 24 &13.91 & sdB+K2& 4.72& 47.69, 082800003 & 15 15 0 &+57 4 0 &11.40 & sdB+K1& 92.21& 50.82, 15262+1311 & 15 26 12 &+13 11 9 &14.28 & sdB+K5& 19.72& 50.68, 15394+2911 & 15 39 22 &+29 11 3 &14.68 & sdB+K3& 45.94& 52.68, 15586-0043 & 15 58 39 &- 0 43 26 &13.53 & sdB+K4& 9.27& 36.47, 16018+1432 & 16 1 47 &+14 32 58 &14.51 & sdB+K3& 27.06& 43.50, 16101+5253 & 16 10 6 &+52 53 49 &12.85 & sdB+K8& 81.77& 45.25, 16129+7335 & 16 12 54 &+73 35 0 &14.49 & sdB+K2& 107.06& 36.93, 16296+0805 & 16 29 36 &+ 8 5 58 &12.78 & sdB+K7& 23.48& 34.53, endtabular begintabularcccllll star & Alpha(1950) & Delta & V & type & l^II & b^II, 1636+104 & 16 36 40 &+10 24 54 &14.09 & sdB+K2& 26.94& 34.03, TON 264 & 16 47 5 &+25 15 13 &14.10 & sdB+K7& 45.06& 37.15, 16478+0537 & 16 47 51 &+ 5 37 58 &14.76 & sdB+K8& 23.44& 29.37, 16562+2115 & 16 56 12 &+21 15 5 &14.78 & sdB+? & 41.19& 33.92, 17015+3552 & 17 1 35 &+35 52 56 &13.22 & sdB+K6& 58.89& 36.53, 17185+5155 & 17 18 35 &+51 55 5 &13.69 & sdB+K3& 78.96& 35.01, 1858+5736 & 18 58 00 &+57 36 00 &14.5 & sdB+? & 87.79& 21.79, 20242+5303 & 20 24 13 &+53 3 12 &14.57 & sdB+K0& 89.18& 8.85, 21109+1244 & 21 10 56 &+12 44 44 &12.93 & sdB+K2& 62.92& -23.60, 21186+1238 & 21 18 38 &+12 38 3 &13.58 & sdB+K2& 64.11& -25.14, 092200002 & 21 34 54 &+13 14 0 &10.43 & sdB+K3& 67.47& -27.79, 21355+0428 & 21 35 30 &+ 4 28 39 &14.64 & sdB+K3& 59.71& -33.46, 21486+0930 & 21 48 41 &+ 9 30 39 &13.04 & sdB+K3& 66.84& -32.78, 22154+5037 & 22 15 25 &+50 37 48 &13.73 & sdB+K4& 99.71& -4.82, 22264+0921 & 22 26 29 &+ 9 21 59 &14.03 & sdB+K5& 74.84& -39.51, 090900007 & 22 50 48 &+21 38 0 &13.30 & sdB+G2& 89.79& -33.16, 22549+5444 & 22 54 55 &+54 44 24 &14.36 & sdB+K1& 106.96& -4.18, 22593+1322 & 22 59 16 &+13 22 31 &14.55 & sdB+? & 86.42& -41.23, BD- 7 5977 & 23 15 12 &- 6 44 56 &10.52 & sdB+G & 71.68& - 59.58, 083738002 & 23 19 18 &+25 0 0 &13.30 & sdB+K3& 98.59& -33.23, PB 5446 & 23 31 25 &+ 3 47 18 &14.94 & sdB+? & 89.10& -53.55, PB 5495 & 23 37 30 &+ 7 0 25 &13.47 & sdB+ ?& 93.77& -51.40, endtabular begintabularlll Cycle 5 & Primary Orbits: & Exposures:25, endtabular Real_Time_Justification: ! 32hours of IUE time have been allocated four the final IUE ! observing round to measure UV fluxes for several of our ! target systems in order to determine precise temperatures of ! the primaries.
