Free format text (please update) We will take Snapshot FOC images of 100 high z QSOs through UV filters to find a few QSOs whihc are relatively unabsorbed in the far UV. We have already proven that the method works well, and we now wish to complete the search of bright z>3 QSOs, and especially to extend to lower z QSOs. The 10 QSOs which will be detected have three uses: (1) QSOs at z>2.8 show He II 304 absorption at HST wavelengths. We now know of 5 QSOs which have flux at these wavelengths, and more are needed to (a) improve the determination of the rate of change of tau with z. (b) check for spatial variations in HeII absorption, (c) to measure the He II "proximity effect" which uses the balance between QSO and IGM background flux to measure the spectrum and intensity of the latter, and (d) to find one or two QSOs which are brighter than those now know, bright enough for high signal to noise spectra which separate the He II line absorption from the diffuse IGM. (2) Far UV spectra contain 90\% of all QSO absorption lines, including all observable lines from many important elements and ions. High SNR spectra will give ionizations and metal abundances which can not be obtained with optical spectra alone. (3) We will combine both the detected fluxes and the upper limits to improve our measurement of the instrisic spectral slope of QSOs from the optical to ~eq 304 Angstrom. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The goal is to find the occasional QSO which has flux in the far UV. This is best done with images through FOC UV filters. Snapshots are ideal, since we want to check many QSOs, and those which have enough flux for follow up spectra are bright enough to detect in 5 min FOC exposures. We chose filters which peak just to the red of the He II 304 absorption, at 304(1+z_em). We do not use the narrow filters, which have significantly lower throughput. Filters are: F140W (z < 3.4); F170M (3.4 < z < 4.5), and F190M (z> 4.5, if any). These choices were made to maximize the correlation between the flux in the filter, and the flux at 304(1+z). Differences arise because (1) the filter peaks are offset and to the red of 304(1+z), (2) there can be LLS in the band pass of the filter, and (3) there is red leak flux, especially when there is a complete Lyman edge just to the red of the filter band pass. We made monte Carlo simulations of these factors for QSOs at various z, and choose the filters which gave the tightest correlation between the counts in the filter and the QSO flux at 304(1+z). For QSOs at z<2.8 we will not see 304 with HST, but F140W is ideal because it has the highest throughput at short wavelengths which are most interesting for follow up spectra. centerlineRed Leak These filters have a residual transmission of about 10^-4 from the main band pass out into the optical, which allows some red leak flux. We have fully treated this problem with our earlier observations. We can calculated the amount of red leak flux for each QSO, given the optical magnitude, the likely UV spectral slope, and the distribution of H I column densities of intervening Lyman limit absorbers. We ran Monte Carlo simulations including various choices for the spectra slopes and intervening LLS to obtain the probabilities of different fluxes in the FOC filters. The observed FOC flux is the combination of the QSO UV flux plus the red leak. Once a QSO is detected by the FOC, we re-run these simulations to find the probability of differing proportions of QSO UV flux and red leak. conditinoal on the observed FOC counts, and an assumed distribution function for the intrinsic UV spectral slope, whihc is approximately known. The conculsion is that red leak is a slight problem, and can account for most the flux from some of the QSOs which give the lowest FOC counts, but when a QSO gives a lot of counts in the FOC, this must be mostly UV flux and not red leak. In all cases, we can fully simulate and statistically correct for red leak. We could completely remove the red leak by observing through two filters, reducing the red leak by 10^4, but this is unnecessary, and the peak transmission of the product of two filters is too low (5-10 times lower that that of one filter). Tracking. We will use normal FOC tracking. We did simulations which show that this is much superior to unguided images: the QSO would then trail over many more pixels, each of which has background counts much larger than those from the QSO. Exposure times. For our previous snap survey we chose exposure times to give unambiguous detection off any QSO which had enough flux for a low SNR=5/pix exposure with GHRS G140L in 20 hours. This was achieved (and confirmed by FOS spectra) with exposures of 400 sec (F140W), 660 sec (F170M) and 550 sec (F190M). There are now two major improvements, which both allow us to consider QSOs with less UV flux. STIS G140L has several times (depending on wavelength) the sensitivity of GHRS, and much lower background, which will allow spectra of fainter QSOs, while the FOC is more sensitive because of COSTAR. Longer exposures have advantages: we detect a more QSOs (not many more, because QSOs which are not detected are often extinguished my many magnitudes). Some of these may be rare high z QSOs with UV flux, which is important for the Gunn-Peterson effect, and all detections allow estimates of the intrinsic spectral slopes. But short exposures are more likely to be scheduled. We now show that the exposure times which we used before (in 400 sec F140W; 660 sec F170M; and 550 sec F190M) are ideal. They are sufficient to detect all QSOs with enough flux to give signal to noise 5 per pixel with STIS in 20 hours exposure around 1300 Angstrom\ . We scale to our past FOC images in the same filters, and to our FOS G130H spectrum of a faint QSO. 1. Q1935-692 has a flux of 2 * 10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1 /Angstrom\ at 1300 Angstrom\ . 2. This gave 18 cts/pixel (0.25 Angstrom\ )/14 hours with FOS G130H. 3. STIS G140L is about 5 times more efficient at these wavelengths, near its peak. 4. STIS G140L pixels are 0.6 Angstrom\ . 5. STIS will give 216 cts/14hr/0.6A pix 6. STIS background counts would be negligible: 6 * 10^-5 cts/s = 3.0 cts in 14 hr. 7. STIS would give SNR=5 /pix = 25 cts/pix in 20 hr on flux = 3.3 * 10^-17 cgs. We want the FOC images to detect all QSOs which exceed this flux at about 1300 Angstrom\ . 8. We measured FOC average background (from 82 images, per-COSTAR) as: 0.42 cts/0.022" pixel in 400 sec F140W; 0.42 cts/0.022" pixel in 660 sec F170M; 0.46 cts/0.022" pixel in 550 sec F190M. 9. After COSTAR background per pixel is about the same, dominated by cosmic rays, but image scale and psf changed. 10. Per-COSTAR mean detection limit in FOC images with above parameters were 7.9 * 10^-17 (G140W), 7.8 * 10^-17 (G170M), and 6.7 * 10^-17 (G190M). These limits were determined from random sampling the noise levels in blank images, and are considered accurate. They vary from exposure to exposure, because the background varies. 11. When have one real object in about 10 images, detection limits are set by counts in the object core. Prior to COSTAR we found the maximum sensitivity with a core diameter of 0.2" (64 pixels area), which contained about 18\% of the object flux (this varies with wavelength a bit -- I do not have these numbers, but not a big effect). 12. Now with COSTAR, get about 58\% in core of 69 pixels with G140M, 65\% with G170M, and 66\% with G190M (FOC manual V6.0, p49). Scaling to 64 pixels, to preserve the background level, these numbers are: 54\%, 60\%, and 61\%. 13. New post-COSTAR detection limits will be scaled from (10) by the ratios of the counts in the cores: 18/54 for G140W etc. FLux limits are: 2.6 * 10^-17 (G140W); 2.3 * 10^-17 (G170M); and 2.0 * 10^-17 (G190M). Since these are all just below the desired limit of 3.3 * 10^-17 (7), we conclude that exposure times given in (8) are adequate. We would not want much shorter expsoure times, because flux limits are worse than these averages when the background is above average.
