Borkowski PI_Institution: North Carolina State University CoI_Name: J. Patrick Harrington CoI_Institution: University of Maryland Contact: Abstract: We propose a snapshot survey for narrow jets in planetary nebulae (PNe), through narrow-band HAlpha and N II imaging with the WFPC2. The presence of such jets in a substantial fraction of PNe is strongly suggested by a growing body of circumstantial evidence based on ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. Jets are not expected in the standard interacting-wind model for the PN formation, and require a radically new solution, such as the presence of an accretion disk in a binary system. The origin of jets in PNe is an intriguing and important astrophysical problem. The most recent images of NGC 6543 with the HST WFPC2 revealed, for the first time, a highly-collimated jet in a PN. This unexpected discovery demonstrates the HST ability to detect jets in PNe. A snaphot survey of a sample of bright PNe suspected of harboring jets would provide us with fundamental information on jets in PNe. Questions Observing_Description: We are proposing snapshot observations of our target list (some of which we have listed in the "Observing Summary" section) using the F631N and F658N narrow-band HAlpha and N II filters. As a example, consider IC 4634 (PK 0+12D1), a PN which is an excellent example of point symmetry. The HBeta flux of this object is 1.3 * 10^- 11 ergs cm^2 s^-1. The overall HAlpha /HBeta ratio is 4, and N II/HBeta is 0.3. The dimensions of the point-symmetric outer region are 22" * 8". From Synphot calculations of the response of the WFPC2 filters, we find that if the flux were distributed uniformly over this area, we would expect 110 counts per pixel in the HAlpha image of the PC for a 10 min exposure. The corresponding value for N II is 8 counts/pixel. Since we only need a few counts/pixel to see linear features such a narrow jets, this is an acceptable S/N. Because of centering concerns and to avoid degraded resolution, we will acquire a guide star for these images. This overhead -- along with that for a CR-split -- still lets us take a 10 min exposure in close to the snapshot guideline of a maximum of about 20 min. The fluxes of our targets will of course vary, some brighter than our example, some fainter. In the case of the fainter objects, we may not have good S/N in the outer regions, but all the objects have central regions of sufficient surface brightness for exposures of this length to produce useful images. We are willing to waive our data rights after a period of two months.
