Free format text (please update) We propose to obtain snapshot survey images for many of the galaxies in the IRAS ultraluminous galaxy sample using the WFPC2 in the I bandpass (F814W). These will be used to study the galaxies' cores and starburst regions, with particular emphasis on searching for young stellar clusters, as have already been found in HST observations of similar objects. Nearly all of these galaxies show evidence for a very recent tidal interaction, and we will search for evidence of the merger progenitors by searching for multiple cores near the center of each galaxy. We will also study the galaxies' morphological properties, particularly searching for any fine structure in the star-forming regions. These images will be used to map the spatial distribution of the starburst activity in these galaxies, to derive the distribution and properties of the major star-forming regions, to search for evidence of large H II complexes of the 30 Dor type, and to search for sharp, bright structures (e.g., the rims of super-shells or propagating waves of star formation). In addition, these images will serve as a baseline for future HST observations of the same objects in searches for the Type II supernovae that are expected to be produced at a prodigious rate in these strongly starbursting systems (several SNe per year per galaxy). Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose to observe as many of the 160 ultraluminous IRAS galaxies as possible. If necessary, we will restrict the sample to the high--flux sample of 34 galaxies found by Sanders Etal (1988a) and by Melnick & Mirabel (1990). The low--flux sample of 126 galaxies found by Lawrence Etal (1995) would be particularly suited to comparisons of their HST--resolved morphology with ground--based resolved morphology of the low--redshift sample of 34 --- to determine if these extremely starbursting objects are morphologically evolving or not with increasing redshift (e.g. are multiple nuclei, which are the signatures of on-going mergers, more or less common in the higher--redshift sample?). Our proposed images would be obtained as a SNAPSHOT survey with WFPC2, using the F814W I--band filter, placing each target in the center of WF3. A sample exposure--time calculation is given below. We request, if at all possible and if consistent with the SNAPSHOT survey policy, that some of the low--redshift objects (in the high--flux group of 34) be observed more than once, at times spread over the whole observing cycle. This will provide an opportunity to search for potential supernova outbursts. Since we are requesting 12-minute exposures and since the pointing drifts at the rate of 1.4 milliarcsec/sec under gyro pointing control, we specifically request that the observations be taken with Fine Lock guiding. We request a 6- -month proprietary data rights period for all of the exposures. This should provide us with enough opportunity to address some of the questions that we are most interested in resolving and would then provide the data to other researchers in a more timely manner than with the usual 12-- month release period. We will attempt to study features with I--band surface brightness levels brighter than mu_I^gal ~ 20 I mag/arcsec^2 ~ 25 I mag/pixel. The detected WFPC2 signal (electrons) in F814W during N_R * T seconds of integration (with N_R read--outs, utilizing CR--SPLIT) will be: centerlineS = N_el = 2.5 * 10^11 * ( N_R * T ) * (QT) * 10^- 0.4(Mu/pix) ~ 0.45 * ( N_R * T ) , where (QT) = 0.018 for F814W. The noise will be: centerlineNoise = sqrt N_el + sky * ( N_R * T ) + N_R * (RN)^2 . The sky brightness contributes roughly 0.07 e^-/sec (ref. WFPC2 Instrument Handbook), and the read noise is ~ 5 e^-. Therefore, for 2 * T = 720 sec (including the CR--SPLITs), we obtain S/N ~ 15. Since these are extreme IR--luminous galaxies, a significant fraction of the galaxy image should satisfy our surface brightness constraint in this calculation (especially the high--surface brightness features that we are searching for), thereby producing a high--quality WFPC2 image with the 12-- minute exposure.
