Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: ! Free format text (please update) The binary frequency for late-M dwarfs is unknown because a survey for companions to these low luminosity objects is difficult due to ground-based limitations. This knowledge has a direct influence on our understanding of star formation processes and on our interpretation of the faint end of the stellar luminosity function. We propose a search around 11 very late M dwarfs (spectral types of M8 V or cooler) to look for stellar and substellar companions at separations from ~2 to 1000 AU (~0.2 to 100 arcsec). Because our targets are within ~10 pc, possible companions will (1) be easily verified because they must share common proper motion with the primaries and (2) be easily characterized since their distance is known a priori from the trigonometric parallax of the primary. Based on the observed multiplicity of early- to mid-M dwarfs, these HST observations are expected to discover three to four new, extremely low-luminosity members of the solar neighborhood. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Each target will be observed once in Cycle 6 (epoch 1) and once in Cycle 7 (epoch 2). Each target will have three integrations per epoch: a short, an intermediate, and a long F814W exposure. This filter is chosen because it is the reddest of the ``wide'' filters and will provide the deepest images. This sequence of exposures will give 13 magnitudes of dynamic range. Each visit will require one orbit per epoch. The target objects will thus require 11 orbits in Cycle 6 and 11 in Cycle 7. These will be centered in the field of the PC. The baseline between the two sets should be as close to 12 months as possible to assure that (1) the field falling within the bounds of the WFC is the same in both observation sets, and that (2) we are viewing the target near the same point in its parallactic ellipse (i.e., to assure that there is a yearly displacement relative to the background for those objects whose yearly proper motion is comparable in size to the trigonometric parallax).
