Our aim is to use the unparalleled spatial resolution of HST to determine the fraction of binary/multiple systems in this complete, proper-motion selected sample. By concentrating on the low-luminosity stars, these observations offer the prospect of detecting cool, sub-stellar mass brown dwarfs - at the age of the Hyades, a 0.06 M_\odot BD has M_I ~ 15.5. During cycle 4, we obtained observations of 23 stars, four of which proved to be Hyades binary. Allowing for observational selection effects, this implies a binary fraction of 26 +/- 15 \% - comparable to the 32 \% observed in the field. Moreover, all of the binaries are near equal-mass systems, with none of the companions close to the H-burning limit. Both of these results disagree with the predictions of the models by Kroupa (1995, MN, in press), which predict a larger binary fraction and more very low-mass companions. Clearly, however, the observational results are based on small-number statistics. The current proposal aims at redressing this defect by completing observations of this well-defined sample, more than doubling the number of Hyades stars surveyed. These observations will be complemented by a ground-based radial velocity survey. Questions Observing_Description: We propose to obtain PC observations of Hyades cluster members with absolute magnitudes fainter than M_V = +12, completing our observations of the stars identified in the Reid (1992) proper motion survey. We intend using the F850LP filter, matching our previous snapshot observations, since the long wavelength is better suited to identifying very low- mass/brown dwarf companions. The individual exposure times will be set to give peak fluxes of 10000 counts/pixel and range from 4 to 60 seconds. Based on previous experience with Snapshot data, we request two exposures of each star to allow accurate removal of cosmic ray hits. Real_Time_Justification: None. Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: In addition to obtaining near-infrared speckle observations of the brighter K- and M-dwarfs in the Hyades (in collaboration with Ghez & Patience, UCLA), we intend to obtain multiple-epoch Keck HIRES observations of all Hyades members with M_V > +10 and multi-epoch Palomar 60-inch echelle data for the brighter M-dwarfs in the cluster. Cross- correlating these echelle spectra will provide a velocity resolution of ~ 0.5 km s^-1, allowing us to identify at least 50 \% of the close binaries inaccessible to HST PC observations.
