Abstract The HDF experiment consists of WFPC2 imaging through the F300W, F450W, F606W, and F814W passbands of one selected field of the sky for 150 orbits of CVZ time. The program will provide multi-wavelength data of unprecedented depth on morphology and spectral energy distribution of faint field galaxies. This proposal consists of ten orbits of observations of flanking fields adjacent to the central HDF field designed primarily for the benefit of ground-based long-slit spectroscopy and for possible follow-up with future HST instruments such as the Advanced Camera, etc. We will use only the F814W passband in this flanking fields program. There are 8 flanking fields, two on either side of the deep field thus forming a strip on the sky, plus two above and two below which allow more flexibility in the angles chosen by ground- based observers for long-slit spectroscopy as well as increasing the area covered for possible follow-up with the Advanced Camera and/or other instruments. The two flanking fields that are in the strip adjacent to the central HDF field will have two orbits of exposures each, with all the rest having a single orbit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6340( 5) - 11/17/95 12:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The HDF observations consist of WFPC2 imaging of the field towards 1236+6213 in the Ursa Major constellation. "Flanking fields" are being observed in order to more greatly benefit observers doing long-slit spectroscopy from the ground, as well as to provide a basis for more possible follow-up work with the Advanced Camera and other possible future instruments. There are 10 non-CVZ orbits dedicated to this flanking fields project. The overall pattern of the mosaic of flanking fields is comprised of a strip with the "deep" HDF field in the center and two fields in a line on either side of it, each aligned such that the outer corner of WF3 fits over the PC1 field of view and is nestled in the inner corner of the WFPC2 chevron pattern of the field just to the east of it. Just above and below the central "deep" field, there are four more fields aligned the same way, two overlapping the two outer edges of the "deep" field chip 2 on the North, and two overlapping the two outer edges of the "deep" field chip 4 on the South. The fields' coordinates are chosen so as to produce an overlap of ~4 arc seconds between adjacent fields. The two inner fields that are adjacent to the central "deep" field will be done in a total of 4 orbits (2 orbits per field, 2 exposures each ) while all the other 6 fields will be done in 6 orbits, 1 orbit per field, and 3 exposures per orbit. These should be sufficient for basic cosmic ray rejection. We are not dithering in the observations of these flanking fields but will instead rely on DARKs for dealing with the hot pixels, etc. All the flanking field exposures are to be done in the F814W filter. All of the flanking field exposures should be done at the SAME ORIENT ( nominally U3=292.0D ) as the central "deep" field so that the extended mosaic of flanking fields is aligned properly and the overlap is preserved among all the adjacent fields. Note that we have NOT attempted to tweak the overlap and roll and target positions of the flanking fields such that the alignment of CCD columns and rows is preserved across the entire mosaic as it was felt not to be a crucial factor by the HDF working group. We have merely requested that all be done at the SAME ORIENT as the central HDF ( U3=292.0D ) so that the overall pattern of desired field coverage for ground- based long slit spectroscopy and possible imaging by the HST Advanced Camera and other instruments is preserved. Each flanking field is in its own separate visit, so therefore all visits should be done at the SAME ORIENT as that used for the central "deep" field. The GROUP 1-8 WITHIN 7D requirement may be relaxed for scheduling purposes so long as the SAME ORIENT is preserved for all, and all are done in a close enough time period to achieve the SAME ORIENT as the central deep field within a reasonably short amount of time, e.g. not a year later, but within days or weeks of the central HDF if possible. Please do at SAME ORIENT as the HDF central (deep) field, which is nominally at U3 ORIENT 292.0D, exactly in the middle of the range specified here. Do all flanking fields at the SAME ORIENT as the central HDF exposures, and consequently do all flanking fields at the SAME ORIENT AS 1 in order to provide a mosaic of contiguous fields for long-slit spectroscopy, etc. GROUP WITHIN requirement may be relaxed as needed for scheduling as long as SAME ORIENT is maintained.
