Abstract The HDF experiment consists of WFPC2 imaging through the F300W, F450W, F606W, and F814W passbands of one selected field of the sky for 180 orbits of CVZ time. The program will provide multi-wavelength data of unprecedented depth on morphology and spectral energy distribution of faint field galaxies. This proposal consists of two orbits of CVZ observations designed to test the HDF program, in particular guide star availability and background stray-light contamination. We will use only the F606W passband in this test program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6313( 4) - 11/01/95 15:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The HDF observations consist of WFPC2 imaging of the field towards 1236+6213 in the Ursa Major constellation. The selected passband for this two-orbit test is F606W. Cosmic ray removal can be performed very efficiently without the need of any additional CR-SPLIT, which will actually add noise. We have also chosen to use the default WFALL-FIX aperture about 10" in x and 10" in y from the WFPC2 apex ( i.e. on WF3, about 14" from the apex ) because in this case, due to the scarcity and exact positions of available and identical guide star pairs at the two times of year needed ( June 1995 for this test, and December 1995 for the deep CVZ exposures ) the normally effective strategy of using POS TARG offsets to place the Fixed Target List coords at the WFPC2 apex ( i.e. the telescope boresight ) cannot be used. Therefore, there will be a slight displacement in the fields covered between this test and the deeper CVZ exposures to be done at 180 degrees opposite in December 1995. WFALL-FIX ( as opposed to simply WFALL ) is also chosen in order to avoid any further change in the relative pointings between the test and deep exposures which may arise between June 1995 and December 1995 should the "optimum" WFALL aperture position be changed due to reasons of chip defects, or etc. at some point during that time. The "-FIX" aperture preserves the aperture positions over time and will ensure that the same desired guide stars are still in a useable part of the FGS pickles in December 1995. We have chosen not to dither for these test exposures, although dithering will be used for the HDF exposures in the final, full 180-orbit experiment, and the dithering for those exposures will also be designed so as to retain the use of the desired guide stars while still optimizing the quality of the scientific data. In addition to this, the December 1995 deep observations are planned to be done while the targets are in the CVZ, however that is not possible for these June 1995 test observations. In order to facilitate the scheduling of this test, we have likewise dropped our original constraints on placing the F606W observations during orbital night and will instead determine the background and stray light effects for the data post facto based on information relevant for that particular time of observing and our own analysis of the data in preparation for the deeper exposures to come. Finally, these fields have been picked on the basis of having no significant known bright sources in any wavelength, and for being as free as possible of infrared cirrus or any other obscuring medium. In other words, the fields have been chosen as being "blank sky" at all wavelengths, as much as possible. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. We are not dithering in this test. The WFALL-FIX aperture ( default aperture position on WF3 about 14" from the apex or 10" in x and 10" in y ) is used instead of placing the Fixed Target list coords at the apex ( i.e. the boresight ) because sufficient guide star pairs could not be found to serve for both June 1995 and December 1995 observations. Therefore, these test exposures will be slightly offset from the final, deep exposures but will include almost all of the deep fields. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 HDF- WFPC2 IMAGE WFALL- F606W CR-SPLIT=NO 1 700S SAME POS AS 1 123649+6213 FIX 46 Comments: Do at SAME POS AS 1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 HDF- WFPC2 IMAGE WFALL- F606W CR-SPLIT=NO 1 700S SAME POS AS 1 123649+6213 FIX 46 Comments: Do at SAME POS AS 1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6313( 4) - 11/01/95 15:53 - [ 6] Visit: 02 Visit Requirements: On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HDF- WFPC2 IMAGE WFALL- F606W CR-SPLIT=NO 1 800S 122837+6237 FIX 57 Comments: All exposures in this visit should be made at the SAME POS AS 1.
