Free format text (please update) Primeval galaxies are systems in the process of forming their first stellar populations. Despite intensive searches over more than a decade, the population of primeval galaxies has not been found and we remain essentially ignorant, from an empirical point of view, as to the early phases of galaxy formation and evolution. In view of this, we propose to obtain images with the WFPC2 of the galaxies causing optically-thick QSO absorption systems, namely damped Lyman-alpha and Lyman-alpha limit absorption systems, at redshift z>3. We propose to observe the fields around Q22-38 and Q0201+112. These data are meant to complement similar observations we have already obtained with the WFPC2 in other QSO fields. We propose the F702W filter to study the rest-frame UV light of galaxies in a spectral region that at z>3 corresponds to Lambda>1750 Angstrom. This study is aimed at elucidating the UV morphology of high-redshift galaxies during their star-forming phase, probing the existence of the structural components such as disk and bulge. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The proposed observations consist of WFPC2 imaging of the fields around Q22-38 and Q0102+112 through the F606W passbands, for total of 5 orbits in each field. Targets of the program are the galaxies causing the high-redshift absorption systems observed in the spectra of the QSOs. The QSOs have magnitudes V=18.6 and V=19.5, respectively. Based on our previous observations, the obsorbing galaxies are expected in the range $V>24$ and at radial distances from the QSOs larger than about 2 arcsec. We will put the QSO with the absorbing galaxy in the PC chip. We want each exposure about 20 minute long, which avoids strong saturation of the QSO. After each exposure the telescope will be stepped by an integer number of pixels both in RA and DEC. We do not need CRSPLIT because we will have enough exposures to allow a proper subtraction of cosmic rays. Real_Time_Justification: None. Calibration_Justification: ! The galaxy causing the damped system of the QSO is at z=3.338. Fixed_Targets ! Given the selected exposure times, only a very modest amount of saturation, with no blooming will take place. This will not give problems when identifying the absorbing galaxy. The damped system of the QSO is at z=3.275. !Solar_System_Targets ! Section 5.2 ! Target_Number: ! Target_Name: ! Description: ! Level_1: ! Satellite of Sun ! Level_2: ! Satellite of Level_1 !
