Abstract Markarian 463 is an interacting pair of galaxies with two nuclei separated by four arcseconds. The western nucleus has strong narrow emission lines and is best described as a LINER. The brighter eastern nucleus has a classical Seyfert 2 spectrum in unpolarized light. In polarized light broad permitted lines of a Seyfert 1 appear, revealing a hidden broad-line source (Miller & Goodrich 1990). Presumably, far from the nucleus reflects or scatters the Seyfert 1 spectrum into our line of sight, polarizing it in the process. A WFPC-1 observation by us showed the Seyfert 2 nucleus was extended and was the origin of a sub-arcsecond optical jet (Uomoto et al. 1993). The jet was resolved into a handful of hot spots similar to the jets in 3C273 and M87. Unlike those synchrotron jets, however, the Mrk 463 jet is most likely due to a mix of starlight, nebular emission, and reflected Seyfert 1 light. The proposed observations are intended to sort out the spatial details in the jet and nucleus and examine the connection between them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6301( 5) - 04/19/97 18:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The WFPC-1 observations were part of an exploratory survey and are of limited use for astrophysical analysis. These early acquisition exposures were short, had poor image quality, and suffered from ill-positioned filter bandpasses due to the redshift of Mkn 463. The new WFPC-2 observations proposed here will allow us to observe the structure and emission mechanisms in the nuclear region of this galaxy. In particular, we will locate structures with strong [O III] 5007 emission by comparing an on-band linear ramp filter image with an F588N image used as a continuum reference. By mapping the [O III] emission we can test directly the popular hypothesis that Seyfert 2 spectra are formed in an extended nuclear region and that the ionizing source and associated broad line region are hidden from direct view. We already know from our WFPC-1 observations that the eastern nucleus is the source of most of the [O III] emission and presumably the Seyfert 2 spectrum. We also know that the eastern nucleus is extended. We anticipate strong [O III] emission in an extended region around the eastern nucleus. If this is the case, then we can measure directly the size of the Seyfert 2 emitting region. From this, and the doppler width of the emission lines, the mass of the central object can be inferred. The optical jet extending nearly an arcsecond south of the eastern nucleus is probably not synchrotron emission as in 3C273 or M87. The radio luminosity, while not zero, is insufficient to explain the optical light as synchrotron. On the other hand, the jet is probably not a random alignment of starbursts either. The high resolution observations with a well-tuned [O III] bandpass and good signal-to-noise proposed here will separate the starbursts, ionized gas, and ordinary clusters, allowing us to examine the link between the jet and nucleus.
