From: nelson@astrosun.astro.wisc.edu Proposal_Information title: TIME RESOLVED FOS OBSERVATIONS OF THE AP STAR HD 60435 Proposal_Category: GTO/HSP Scientific_Category: COOL STARS Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_name: ROBERT C. BLESS PI_Institution: WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF Questions Observing_Description: Real_Time_Justification: No real-time observations are requested for this proposal. The observatons in this proposal require a total integration time of 21,600 seconds during a CVZ visit of the target. The extended nature of the observation is essential for two reasons: a) A single long observation is require to properly measure the multiple frequencies and their spacings found in this star. Shorter observations would confuse adjacent pulsations. b) A CVZ visit is requested to eliminate period aliasing due to gaps in the data normally introduced by the HST orbit. This is important since the aliasing would be introducing power at period spacings similar to those found in the star. Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: The observation should be scheduled for orbits that avoid the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). If possible within the constraints of CVZ scheduling, the observations are requested to be scheduled within 2 months of January 15 1996 to allow this observation to coincide with ground based observations planned for early 1996. abstract: As part of the SV program of HSP HD 60435 was observed with the HSP as a test of the photometric stability of the HSP. This program was successful in identifying many of the photometric stability problems which had to be dealt with in later HSP observations. However, it also yielded some interesting scientfic results which will followed up. The primary results of the HSP data were the detection of both known and previously unknown pulsations in the star. In addition significant low frequency features are evident in the power spectrum of the star which have not been accounted for as either noise or instrument effects. Further observations of this star will be accomplished with the FOS in RAPID mode for an observation duration of about 6 hours while the target is in the CVZ of the HST.
