Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Cycle SOLAR SYSTEM GTO/HRS 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Investigators Contact? PI: LAURENCE TRAFTON UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Abstract Survey Uranus' FUV spectrum at low-resolution using the solar-blind grating G140L with the GHRS. The spectra will span 1072-1645 A which includes the regions of the Lyman and Werner H2 bands to search for emissions from H2 and aeronomical species generated by ion chemistry in the intense aurora and ionosphere. A comparative study with Jupiter will be attempted. Also, obtain moderately high-resolution spectra of Uranus' Ly-alpha emission near quadrature so that the Uranian emission is Doppler shifted out of the geocoronal emission. For this, grating ECH-A will be used with the LSA to optimize the tradeoff between resolution and throughput. The Ly-alpha line profile will be obtained and interpreted in terms of ionospheric and auroral emission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6291( 20) - 12/01/95 18:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The GHRS+LSA will be used with Side 1 to obtain spectra of Uranus' Ly-alpha H emission and H2 emissions to study the auroral vs. ionospheric contributions. An offset acquisition will be performed after an ONBOARD-ACQ of Titania. G140L will be used to survey the H-alpha/Werner-band region and also the dayglow region of the Lyman-H2 bands near 1500A. Ech-A will obtain a high-resolution spectrum of H-alpha near pre-opposition quadrature. Quadrature is required for the ECH-A spectrum in order to Doppler-shift Uranus' Ly-alpha line away from the geocoronal line. Pre-opposition quadrature permits a search for D-alpha emission as part of the high-resolution survey. Uranus opposition is July 9, 1996. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- This is a reduced version of the original GTO proposal 1202, restored to the original choice of Side 1 after the early loss of Side 1 temporarily forced a change to Side 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_address Ship Via: UPS Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6291( 20) - 12/01/95 18:21 - [ 3] TARGET LIST b)Solar System Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET NUMBER: 1 | TARGET NAME: URANUS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET DESCRIPTION: PLANET URANUS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 1 | TARGET POSITION LEVEL 2 | STD=URANUS | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 3 | WINDOWS | | OLG OF URANUS BETWEEN 60 90 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DATA | COMMENTS | TYPE=G2V V = 5.7 SURF(1216.0)=31.0e-13 W- | OBSERVE AURORAL AND IONOSPHERIC | EMISSION FROM DISK.
