Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: ! Free format text (clear and concise) This proposal concludes GTO observations by D. L. Lambert using the GHRS. Four problems are addressed. (1) The ultraviolet spectrum of Eps Aur will be obtained from 1190-1450A with G140L. IUE observations show that in this interval the spectrum is emitted by the enigmatic secondary and not the A-type supergiant. These observations will provide the first detailed spectrum of the secondary. (2) Two high galactic latitude B stars will be observed at 1360A with G160M to obtain the boron abundance. These stars are too far from the galactic plane to have been born in the plane and, therefore, the boron abundance will refer to their sites of formation, presumably gas clouds far from the plane. (3) Theta Uma will be observed at 2090A with ECH-B in an attempt to obtain the 10B/11B isotopic ratio from the B I 2089A resonance line. (4) Interstellar CO bands in Zeta Oph will be observed with ECH-A to high S/N in order to define the line profiles, to search for weak high rotational lines and to confirm the isotopic ratios derived previously from G160M spectra. Questions ! Free format text (clear and concise) Observing_Description: This proposal covers four remaining parts of DLL's GTO program of observations with the GHRS. Brief descriptions follow: (1) Eps Aur will be observed with G140L with the blue wavelength limit set at 1190A, the new limit for GHRS. The intent is to observe the UV spectrum at a S/N of about 40 in this region where we have previously shown from IUE observations that the enigmatic secondary dominates the flux. IUE fluxes (Parthasarthy & Lambert PASP 95 1012 1983) have been used to estimate the S/N attainable. (2) Two high galactic latitude B-type stars will be observed with G160M at 1362A in order to record the B II 1362A resonance line. With the SSA we expect to resolve the stellar lines. The 35A coverage will provide an adequate number of reference lines including additional Si III lines, a Si III line is blended with the B II line. The stars HD 220787 and HD 217505 are young and at such large distance from the galactic plane that they must have been born outside the plane. The exposure times provide for a S/N of about 80 and 170 for HD 220787 and HD 217505, respectively. (3) Theta Uma is a star with its full complement of the light elements Li, Be and B. The B abundance determination is based on the 2496A B I line. Here, we propose to observe the 2089A resonance lines which provide a measureable isotopic shift between the 11B and 10B lines according to laboratory measurements (Johansson et al. ApJ 403 L25 1993). Observations will be with ECH-B and SSA. A total S/N of about 100 will be obtained. An accurate wavelength scale necessary to search for the 25mA isotopic shift will be provided by a WAVECAL at the start of each orbit. (4) Zeta Oph, the premier target for observations of local interstellar clouds, will be observed with ECH-A at three wavelengths (1477.6, 1392.5, 1263.4A) providing CO A-X bands. Each observation with SSA will be made at 4 slightly different wavelengths so that the cathode granularity may be removed and a high (=400) S/N obtained by procedures used for our earlier studies with G160M. These observations will extend our lower resolution studies with G160M. Real_Time_Justification: None. Calibration_Justification: WAVE is included in the 2090A exposures of Theta UMa because we are looking for small wavelength shifts and asymmetries. Additional_Comments: Fixed_Targets !
