CoI_Institution: Univ of Wisconsin Washburn Observatory Contact: Westphal Questions Observing_Description: Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: Abstract: Accurate observations or even detection of the central stars of the highest excitation Planetary Nebula are difficult because of the faintness of the central star relative to the nebular background. It is believed that these PN nuclear stars have temperatures in excess of 100000 degrees Kelvin and the large flux in the far ultraviolet produces a nebular surface brightness that overwhelms the stellar radiation in the visual when resolution is seeing limited. Also since these stars are believed to evolve from the red giant phase at constant luminosity they are fainter in the visual than cooler PNN's. The WF/PC spatial resolution will enhance the contrast by the order of 100 while an additional enhancement will be achieved by observing in the UV. This program should result in providing sufficient photometric data to determine the nature of these hot central stars. The UV photometry provides a means of determining the interstellar extinction of the central star which is crucial to the determination of the flux and stellar temperature.
