Free format text (clear and concise) We propose to make sensitive observations of the interstellar abundance of oxygen in ten scattered sightlines through the local ISM. The initial observations in this program toward several stars in Orion have found no evidence of density-dependent depletion from the gas-phase for oxygen. The derived total oxygen abundance toward the Orion stars is consistent with stellar and nebular determinations in Orion at a level that is one-half the solar value. It is possible that the O/H abundance ratio is lower in Orion compared to the Sun because the local Milky Way has suffered a recent infall of metal-poor material. Our proposed observations will establish a firm baseline oxygen abundance and scatter with which to further test this hypothesis. Questions ! Free format text (clear and concise) Observing_Description: We propose to obtain GHRS ECH-A data in the LSA (2-4 samples/diode: STEP-PATT=6, 7) on the interstellar O I absorption line at 1355.598 A toward a sample of 10 stars characterized by low column densities of molecular hydrogen in their sightlines. Since the O I line is expected to be very weak with equivalent widths near 1 mA in these sightlines, we require high S/N ratio data (400-700) on each of our targeted stars. Accounting for guide star acquisition, target ACQ, and exposure overhead times, these sensitivities can be attained in the remaining time in a single orbit per target through the judicious use of FP-Split exposures.
