Proposal_Information Title: Image and Polarization Studies of Radio Galaxies and Jets Proposal_Category: GTO/OS Scientific_Category: Galaxies & Clusters ! Stellar Populations Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_Name: Crane, Philippe PI_Institution: European Southern Observatory Abstract: ! Free format text (clear and concise) FOC images and PC images of selected radio galaxies with known structure wil be obtained. PKS0812+020 will be observed in a continuum and emission line to study the differences in distribution. The jet in 3C66B will be imaged for the first time with the post COSTAR HST to study the structure and to compare with radio maps at similar resolution. The UV bright spot previously detected in NGC6251 will be re-imaged with the post-COSTAR FOC. Questions ! Free format text (clear and concise) Observing_Description: Target 1 is 3C66B. The jet is about 5 arc-sec long and needs to be observed a specific roll angle in order to fit within the field of view. The choice of F430W filter implies that the nucleus will be saturated. Target 2 is PKS0812 to be observed with the PC. The two filters have been chosen to isolate a region of the continuum, and the H-Beta emission line. Since these are very weak emission features in the lobe structure, the long exposures may saturate the nucleus of the QSO. Target 3 is NGC6251. This galaxy has been observed before with FOC, and an object close to the nucleus has been detected in the UV but not in the V. This object lies at an angle close to 90 degrees from the position of the radio jet. These observations with the post costar FOC will provide much higher S:N and resolution than the previous observations. It is likely that the nucleus will be saturated.
