Young clusters were observed in NGC 1275 by WFPC1. A critical question raised by these observations was whether cluster formation was linked to a previous interaction or to the cooling flow around NGC 1275. It is plausible that these two different scenarios would lead to different cluster formation histories, with an interaction causing a burst of cluster formation and a cooling flow causing formation to be extended in time. We intend to distinguish between these histories by deep imaging of the cluster population around NGC 1275. In addition, we are obtaining observations of two additional cooling flow galaxies. In these, we will look for the presence of young clusters. Also, we will investigate our hypothesis that cooling flow galaxies with blue central regions are sites of a recent interaction. Questions Observing_Description: We will observe 5 central cooling flow galaxies. The goal is to look for the presence of young globular cluster systems, interactions, and dust features in these galaxies. In NGC 1275, we will make deep observations to probe down into the primordial globular cluster population and attempt to determine a formation history for the globular cluster populations. In the other cooling flow galaxies, we will look for the presence of young clusters and also determine whether cooling flow galaxies with abnormally blue centers are found to be interacting systems. We will study two galaxies with strong inferred cooling flows, one on which has a very blue center. In addition, we will observe two other galaxies with weak flows and normal colors. To probe into the primordial globular cluster population in NGC 1275, we need to observe to V ~ 27. To separate globular cluster poplations, we need color information. We will observe for two orbits in each of F450W and F702W to obtain these data. In the other more distant cooling flow galaxies, we require one orbit in each color to be able to detect even young clusters and to adequately search for structure in the galaxy light distribution. In the other galaxies, a single orbit for two colors should suffice.
