Proposal_Information Title: Baades Window Proper Motions Proposal_Category: GTO/AST Scientific_Category: Stellar Populations Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_Name: Prof. William H. Jefferys PI_Institution: University of Texas CoI_Name: Prof. William F. van Altena CoI_Institution: Yale University Contact: N CoI_Name: Dr. Rene A. Mendez CoI_Institution: Yale University Contact: Y Abstract: We propose the first proper motion study of the bulge, to magnitude below its turnoff and into the main sequence, by using HST archival data as first epoch exposures and by obtaining a new series of second epoch exposures within Baade's low-extinction window. By using recently developed centering routines specifically designed to deal with crowded fields taken with the HST, we expect to obtain a mean positional accuracy of 5 milli-arc-seconds per object which at the Galactic center, translates into a tangential velocity error of 20 km/sec. Since typical velocity dispersions in the bulge are on the order of 110 km/sec, we have a good velocity resolution to determine the intrinsic kinematical properties of the Bulge. A Galactic Structure modelling code will be used to aid in the interpretation of the proper motion distributions in terms of a physically-relevant kinematical description of the bulge and the foreground disk, therefore avoiding simplistic assumptions about the distribution of stars along the line of sight as done in previous studies. Questions Observing_Description: These observations constitute a 2nd epoch set of exposures to determine the tangential kinematics of the bulge. Therefore, positional as well as limiting magnitude agreement between the already obtained 1st epoch (archival data) and the proposed 2nd epoch observations is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. The archival data are those of projects ID=1106 and ID=4085, consisting of ten-1,000 sec exposures, two-800 sec exposures, and two-200 sec exposures through filter F555W, twelve-1,000 sec exposures through filter F785LP, and two-200 sec exposures in this same filter. A 1,000 sec exposure through the WFC-F555W has an approximate limiting magnitude of 22.9 mag. Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: Positional match with proposals ID= 1106 and ID= 4085 is CRUCIAL. The Position specified below was taken from the fields RA_TARG and DEC_TARG on the headers of the frames taken under those two proposals. It was assumed that this position refers to the pyramid apex (see Aperture and Special_Requirements on exposure logsheet below).
