Section 4 Title: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYMAN-ALPHA CLOUDS AND GALAXIES AT LOW REDSHIFT Proposal_Category: GTO/HRS Scientific_Category: QUASARS Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_name: Blair Savage PI_Institution: University of Wisconsin-Madison CoI_Name: Limin Lu CoI_Institution: California Instutute of Technology Contact: Y ! Free format text (please update) We will obtain very high S/N (~100:1 per diode) observations of the Lyman-alpha forest region of the low-redshift quasar H1821+643 (zem=0.297) with the GHRS G140L grating. The HST observations will be supplemented with gound-based imagery and spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the quasar field to study the relationship between the Lyman-alpha clouds and galaxies at redshifts z<0.3. Such studies are essential for understanding the nature of the Lyman-alpha clouds detected at much higher redshifts in the optical region. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will use the GHRS and the Large Science Aperture to obtain G140L observations of the quasar H1821+643 in the ACCUM mode. The observations will be centered at 1395 A, covering the wavelength region 1245-1545 A. A total of 4 orbits will be spent on the object. All measurements will be taken with the step pattern 4, which provides two samplings per diode width. The standard FP-split and comb-addition scanning sequence will be used to reduced photocathode and detector window fixed pattern noise. Real_Time_Justification: We request CVZ observations for our target. The target has a declination of +64 degrees, which is right in the middle of the CVZ declination range. Thus it is ideally suited for CVZ observations. The gain in integration time (as compared to non-CVZ observations) is 70%. Calibration_Justification: We request Pt wavelength calibration lamp exposures be taken at the beginning of the science integration in order to obtain accurate wavelength calibrations. Accurate wavelength scales are important to our scientific analyses because we will try to match redshifts of the lyman-alpha absorbing clouds with those of galaxies in the quasar field. Additional_Comments: no additional comments. Fixed_Targets ! Section 5.1 !
