Abstract We propose a photometric search for luminous, young, massive planets and very low- temperature (~ 1200 K) brown dwarfs as companions to 20 low-mass stars in the Hyades (during Cycle 5, we will observe the faintest 8 of these stars). Such massive planets and brown dwarfs in this cluster should be clearly distinguishable from very low-mass stars in both effective surface temperature and luminosity. The Planetary Camera will be used to obtain 1-Mum images of the primary stars in order to search for faint companions. We are undertaking a complementary project at the NASA IRTF involving imaging at J (1.2 Mum), H (1.6 Mum), and K (2.2 Mum) for a sample of 75 low-mass Hyades stars, including the 20 stars proposed here. The IRTF search will reach K=18, while this HST search will reach I=23-24. Cool substellar companions could have I-K >= 8, so the IRTF search will likely be more sensitive, but will also have much poorer spatial resolution. Since a large fraction of stellar companions are within 10 AU of their primary (Henry 1991), and at the distance of the Hyades 0."1 ~ 5 AU, the guaranteed 0."1 spatial resolution of the PC is crucial for this project. A very similar HST Cycle 4 SNAP program is already underway (PI: N. Reid) for I-band imaging of a sample of 35 low-mass Hyades stars to I=20. Our program will go deeper by 3-4 magnitudes, by using the 1-Mum (vs I- band) filter and by taking longer effective exposures. This push to fainter luminosities is substantial, especially considering the large uncertainties associated with current brown dwarf models. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6137( 14) - 09/21/95 11:11 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image the environments of 8 low-mass M dwarfs in the Hyades cluster. We will image using the Planetary Camera and the F1042M filter. Each target star will be imaged 3 times in a single orbit; the 8 target stars will require 8 orbits of HST observing time. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Supporting ground-based observations have been obtained with the NASA IRTF, Mauna Kea, October 12-14, 1994 as part of an ongoing survey of ~75 low- mass Hyades stars. These images are in the near-infrared, at 1.2 Mum, 1.6 Mum, and 2.2 Mum. Because they will be closer to the peak of the spectral energy distribution of possible very cool companions, they will likely go deeper than the HST observations proposed here, but with a trade-off of much poorer spatial resolution. Since most companions are expected to fall within ~ 0."25 at the Hyades distance (Henry 1991), the diffraction-limited spatial resolution of HST is critical to the success of this program. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Each target will take 1 orbit and will presumably be 1 SU for 8 SUs total. A link should be created separating the first SU from the 7 subsequent SUs by >= 1 month to allow the initial data to be evaluated before the remainder of the SUs execute. If at all possible, the first SU should execute during the first Cycle 5 visibility period (last 2 weeks of July 1995) so that initial data can be obtained in support of a Cycle 6 Phase I continuation proposal and for use in preparing for a NASA IRTF observing run during Fall 1995. A Scan_data form is included in this template for use in a spatial scan should that prove more efficient for the observations (of course it represents only one possibility for how a spatial scan could be done). Any spatial scan should be done as closely as possible to the POS TARG setups listed here. Three 10-min exposures/visit are preferable to the four 5-min ones listed here, but a further assessment is needed of how cosmic rays will impact the images and whether 3 vs 4 images/star will make a difference with the psf modeling. All coordinates should be double-checked before any SUs execute. There is a discrepancy in the Starview database in the coordinates for the planned vs executed exposures from the Reid 05353 proposal. All 8 of these targets are duplicated in the 05353 proposal. The coordinates listed here are the J2000 *planned* exposures from 05353 in Starview, which appear to be the precessed B1950 coordinates from Reid, 1992, MNRAS, 257, 257. Why some different coordinates are listed in Starview for the 05353 SUs that have already executed must be resolved. *** UPDATE *** 02 June 1995: coords should be OK.
