Free format text (please update) We propose a Snapshot Survey of about 100 nuclei of Galactic planetary nebulae. The aim is to search for close, resolved binary companions of the central stars, which can be used to determine distances to the nebulae through photometric parallaxes. We estimate that about 10 percent of randomly selected central stars will have visual companions that will be detectable at HST resolution, and we show that our limited Cycle 3 experience agrees with this estimate. The images will be obtained with the WFPC2 PC chip and V (F555W) and I (F814W) filters, with exposure times of a few seconds up to about 15 min. We show that close companions as much as 7 mag fainter than the central stars are detectable with HST. The ultimate aim of the program is to provide a group of objects with accurate distances, which can then be used to calibrate other distance methods for planetary nebulae, thus greatly improving the presently unsatisfactory state of the Galactic planetary-nebula distance scale. This scale is crucial to our understanding of the evolution of nebulae and their central stars, the stellar population and birth rate of planetary nebulae, and their use as extragalactic distance indicators. This program was approved for Cycle 3, but is submitted again for Cycle 5 due to the small amount of data actually obtained in that shortened cycle. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: This is a ``Snapshot Survey'' program in which we are searching for close, but resolved, binary companions of planetary-nebula nuclei (PNNs). In Phase II, we will submit a list of about 100 PNNs, to be observed in Snapshot mode with the PC chip of the WFPC2. The candidates will be selected from lists of statistical PN distances, choosing those preferentially nearest the Sun. As discussed above, the typical companion will be an M dwarf, with a separation distributed uniformly between the HST resolution limit (~0".05) and a few seconds of arc. To reduce the contrast between a very blue PNN and its putative faint red companion, we will use the WFPC2 I filter, F814W. Exposure times for each object will be adjusted in order that the PNN reaches about 100,000 electrons in the central pixel of its image; this is just short of the level of overexposure that would produce blooming and/or saturation of pixels outside the central pixel. Typical exposures, as calculated from the information in the WFPC2 Handbook for the PC chip + F814W filter, will range from 21 sec for a PNN of V=11, to 14 min at V=15. (We neglect the background contribution from the nebula, since PNe are faint in the near-IR in comparison to stars of these magnitudes, and we assume the ``worst case'' that the star is precisely centered within the central pixel.) We will also obtain a V (F555W) frame with a similar exposure level. This will permit an immediate determination of the V magnitude and V-I color (and hence the distance) for any companions that are detected. This strategy seems most efficient, since this very small increase in spacecraft time will avoid the need for HST to revisit the object in the future. Detectability of close companions: As just described, we will obtain images containing an ``optimally overexposed'' central star. Using the PSF for the PC chip and its readout noise and gain (all taken from the WFPC2 Handbook), we can calculate the signal (in electrons) expected from the PNN as a function of radius from the central pixel. We then ask how much fainter a companion star at that radius can be and still be detected against the PSF with a S/N of 10 or 5. Experience with searching for faint targets (PNe and novae) against bright, variable backgrounds (galaxies) indicates that a S/N of 10 will guarantee completeness, and a S/N of 5 is sufficient to detect about 50%. In these calculations we neglected the background from the surrounding nebula, which is small in the I band. At smaller radii, where the photon noise of the PSF dominates, we can still detect objects with Delta mag of about 5 down to one-pixel separations. This performance exceeds that attainable with ground-based speckle interferometry. What sorts of companions will the above performance allow us to detect? Consider a V=11 PNN (I=11.4) at a distance of 1 kpc. A companion 7 mag fainter (I=18.4) will have an absolute magnitude M_I = +8.4, corresponding to an M5 dwarf. If the PNN were at the same distance but as faint as V=15, allowing a correspondingly longer WFPC2 exposure, this faintest detectable companion would have M_I = +12.4, i.e., almost at the bottom of the hydrogen-burning main sequence (Kirkpatrick et al. 1993). Guiding mode: The brighter PNNs can be observed on gyros; a nominal drift rate of 0".0014 per sec means that we can observe to about 11.5 mag on gyros with less than one PC pixel drift during the exposure. Objects fainter than this will be observed in Fine Lock. Number of targets: Our request is driven by the desire to discover approximately a dozen new visual companions to PNNs, with the ultimate aim of applying them to the calibration of the PN distance scale. We expect roughly a 10% success rate. Allowing for the objects already observed in Cycle 3 (see ``Related HST Programs'' below), we propose 100 new targets for Cycle 5. We are willing to waive the usual proprietary data rights. Real_Time_Justification: None. Supporting photometric observations of our newly discovered binaries have been, and will be, obtained with CCD cameras on 0.9-m and larger telescopes at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo.
