Free format text (please update) This is the natural continuation of our Cycle 4 program aimed at using the White Dwarf cooling sequence for the calibration of the globular cluster distance scale, the determination of accurate distances being a prerequisite for the estimate of reliable cluster ages. Cycle 4 observations have just begun; they will deal with the metal poor cluster NGC 6752. Now the goal is to use the same method to obtain the distance modulus of the metal rich cluster 47 Tuc, with an accuracy better than ~ 0.1 mag, which allows a 10\ Besides allowing a more stringent determination of the age of the galactic globular cluster system, the comparison between the age of the two clusters will test whether there really exists a measurable age difference between the metal poor and the metal rich clusters, as has been inferred from some horizontal branch luminosity-metallicity calibration. Besides deep WFPC2 UBVI imaging of 47 Tuc, we also need UBVI photometry of a few local calibration WDs with trig parallax, so as to improve upon the White Dwarf Fiducial Cooling Sequences (FCS) that we have started to construct in Cycle 4. The observed cooling sequences for the cluster (separately for DA and non-DA WDs) will then be fit to the corresponding FCSs to determine the cluster distance modulus. Moreover, directly fitting to each other the WD cooling sequences of the two clusters will allow a very accurate relative distance (hence age!) determination. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: For this program, we are observing 47 Tuc in the U, B, V, I filters only. The formulae used for the exposure time calculation are those specified in the WFPC2 Handbook, May 1994, for the central pixel of each camera, with the following assumptions: 1) Updated instrument efficiencies, 2) AB values for sky and stellar spectra from Table 6.1, taking into account that WDs have different spectral types at V=25 and 26, 3) =23 mag/squarearcsec, 4) Dark=0.005, 5) Read out noise = 5.2 electrons rms per reading, 6) Pij from interpolation of Table 6.4 (p. 58). The exposure times on the target cluster have been calculated in order to reach magnitude V=26 in the three filters F439W, F555W, F814W with S/N ~ 10 for the WDs in 47 Tuc both in the WFC and in the PC. The total exposure time ON the target cluster is 39,000 sec (cf. However, even assuming a one mag brighter Sky S/N ratios do not change appreciably for the adopted exposure times. We also require observations of further field WDs with accurate trig parallax; in this case, we do require also U filter images, since the new WDs will be used in conjunction with the Cycle 4 ones to build up a more accurately defined Fiducial Cooling Sequence, to be applied to NGC 6752 as well. In the case of the local calibration WD exposures we have used the same photometric data described above to calculate exposure times, in order to have approximately S/N=100 for all the four filters. Each WD will have to be observed once per filter and chip, for a total of 16 exposures on the same WD. Because the WD must be placed accurately on each chip, it will be necessary to acquire guide stars for the calibration observations. The total exposure time (shutter open) for the calibration WDs is 247 sec. Real_Time_Justification: The target cluster 47 Tuc could be done during the CVZ period. However, such period is very short, only ~ 60 hours/yr, and so we prefer to have a more flexible scheduling. We have already secured a suitable number of CCD frames of 47 Tuc, taken at ESO NTT, that will allow us to select the best field for HST observations, so as to reduce to a minimum the number of contaminating red giants sampled by WFPC2, especially in the PC chip.
