Abstract We propose to obtain FOS spectra of circumstellar ejecta around extremely luminous, evolved LMC stars in order to determine heavy element abundances. The targets are the three Ofpe/WN9/LBV stars R127, S119, and R143, which represent objects in transition between types O and Wolf-Rayet. They are the key to understanding the relation between the initial and final stages in the evolution of a massive star. The Ofpe/WN9/LBV phase is characterized by a sudden increase of the mass loss rate and the appearance of chemically processed material on the stellar surface. Atmospheric analyses of the heavy element abundances are currently very uncertain, if not infeasible. On the other hand, the objects are surrounded by spatially resolved ejecta which allow a `classical' nebular analysis. The brightness contrast between the stars and the ejecta precludes any ground-based study of this type. We demonstrate that HST observations --- although challenging -- - will allow us to reach this scientific goal. The observations will be used to derive electron- temperatures and -densities and heavy element abundances. Since the nebular abundances reflect the current stellar surface abundances, the proposed analysis is a critical test to reveal deficiencies in atmospheric non-LTE modeling. The derived abundances will be compared to current evolutionary models in an attempt to clarify the astrophysical significance of Ofpe/WN9/LBV stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6110( 9) - 02/26/96 17:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use FOS and the 0.25'' * 2.0'' slit to obtain spectra of the nebulosities around R127, S119, and R143. We will do a 4-stage peak-up on the star, take a spectrum of the star, off-set to 6 positions along the slit and take spectra to be used as flatfields, and then off-set to the nebular positions at a distance of ~2''. To cover the essential diagnostic lines, and to determine the nebular reddenings from the Balmer line ratios, we will use two gratings (G400H and G570H) for a total wavelength range of 3300-- 6800Angstrom. The exposure times are determined by the requirement to have adequate S/N in the weak N II Lambda5755 line (crucial for obtaining the electron temperature) in the G570H region, and O II Lambda3727 (crucial for obtaining the O abundance) in the G400H region. The key diagnostic lines we will use in our abundance analysis are as follows. First for the electron temperature T_e, we will use the N II Lambda5755/Lambda 6584 ratio. The auroral N II Lambda5755 line is expected to be very weak but its detection is favored by the expected overabundance of nitrogen. We do not expect to detect the other T_e-sensitive O III Lambda4363 line because of the probable underabundance of oxygen and the low excitation of the nebulae. Second, for the electron density N_e, we will use the S II Lambda 6717/Lambda 6731 ratio. Previous approximate analyses (Stahl & Wolf 1986; Nota et al. 1994) give N_e ~ 1000 and 800 cm^-3 for R127 and S119 respectively. Ionic abundances will be determined in a straight-forward manner from the de-reddened line intensity ratios using the adopted values of T_e and N_e and the formulae given by Aller (1984). The primary diagnostic line we will use for oxygen is O II Lambda3727. Indeed, given the expected low nebular excitation and therefore probable non- detection of O III, all the oxygen will be present as O^+ and the total oxygen abundance will be given directly by O^+/H^+. The nitrogen abundance will be determined using N II Lambda6584 and the elemental N/O ratio will be given directly by N^+/O^+. Finally for the He abundance, we will use He I Lambda4471, Lambda5876 and Lambda6678 although, realistically, we expect to determine only an approximate helium abundance given the probable large correction for unseen neutral helium. We performed a detailed feasibility study. First we determined the HAlpha brightness profiles of the nebulosities from our coronographic images. Then we calculated the expected strength of the crucial N II line at Lambda5755. Finally we modeled the stellar PSF and compared the stellar continuum flux to the flux in the N II line at the location of the slit. Flatfield variations perpendicular to the dispersion direction were also investigated. In the following we discuss the individual steps of our simulations. The observing strategy has been extensively discussed with the FOS Instrument Scientist in order to guarantee feasibility and achievement of the scientific goals. The nebula around R127 has been resolved in HAlpha+N II by coronographic imaging (Clampin et al. 1993) and appears diamond shaped with two bright, extended lobes located to the east and west of the star, and two much fainter ansae towards the north and south. The two brightest lobes are centered 1.6'' and 2.2'' from the star, respectively (see Figure 2). For the purpose of our observation we have discarded the western lobe to avoid additional contamination from R127b, a V=13 magnitude apparent companion (most likely a field star) located 3'' NW of R127. The HAlpha flux produced in the brightest region of the eastern lobe is 2.9 * 10^-15 erg s^- 1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2. The weakest line we need to detect is N II Lambda5755. Its expected strength was calculated as follows: from observations of other circumstellar ejecta available in the literature we find N II Lambda6584/HAlpha ~ 1 (Smith 1994). The expected absence of O III suggests a low electron temperature. We assume T_e = 7000 K which, together with N_e, leads to N II Lambda6584/N II Lambda5755 ~ 200. Therefore we expect a flux of 1.5 * 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 for N II Lambda5755. At that distance from the star the nebular flux is contaminated by a significant fraction of stellar light due to the wings of R127's point spread function (PSF). We have simulated an HST PSF, using STScI PSF modeling software, at the wavelength of our observation (~eq5700 Angstrom). We have then measured the flux in our selected FOS aperture (0.25'' * 2'') at several distances in the range of 1--3'' east of the star. Tests with several FOS apertures (including the barred apertures) showed that the slit is the best compromise between maximizing the nebular flux and minimizing contamination by the star. Furthermore, we have selected the location which minimized the stellar contamination for the observation of our weakest line (5755 Angstrom). At this distance the wing of the PSF is 0.007\\ or 1.0 * 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 so that the contamination by its PSF will be 7.0 * 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 arcsec^- 2 (or 4 times this value when integrated over the wavelength covered by the N II profile). Comparing the numbers for the nebular and the PSF flux we find that the N II line flux is about 5\\ It is clear at this point why our scientific objective can be achieved only by utilizing HST's superb angular resolution. From the ground, in typical seeing conditions (e.g. 1'') the contribution of the wings of the star's seeing disk would be several orders of magnitude larger if we measure within an aperture of the same size. What are the integration times? The integration time is dominated by the requirement to measure N II Lambda5755, for which the errors must be less than 25\\ The error is given (i) by the S/N obtained in the nebular line alone (if there were no underlying PSF) and (ii) by the subtraction of the PSF, which is 20 times brighter than the line itself. With respect to (i), we find that 1.5 * 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 will lead to 27 counts diode^-1 in 1 hour. The count rate of about 0.01 counts s^-1 diode^-1 is comparable to the dark rate. Therefore S/N = 5 is reached in 2 hours. The maximum S/N achievable is about 100. It is limited by the flatfield correction. The best currently available flatfield for slit observations of extended objects leaves errors of about 5\\ the slit has been done as part of the routine calibrations by STScI. (Note that this calibration is straight-forward. It has not been done simply because there were no observations requiring such a calibration). We intend to use observations of R127 (and S119, R143) at a total of 7 positions along the slit to map the flatfield, and to apply this relative flatfield to the off-star positions. By doing so, we will be able to obtain a flatfield with uncertainty of about 1\\ This is essential since by subtracting the PSF the flatfield uncertainty will be increased by a factor of 20 in the case of R127. We note that our flatfield calibration requires only one additional orbit per target and will be beneficial for other observations using the slit as well. We performed the same analysis for the observations with grating G400H. The exposure time requirement is given by the flux of O II Lambda3727, which is a factor of 10 stronger than N II Lambda5755. We find that a 30 min integration will give errors of about 15\\ an abundance analysis. Of the three targets, R127 is the brightest and is currently 3 magnitudes brighter than the other two. At the same time, the nebular brightnesses are comparable, therefore the calculations for the R127 observations represent our worst case scenario with respect to the PSF subtraction. In the case of S119, the brightest region in the nebula is located at a distance of 2.3'', position angle 47^o and this is the position we will use for the nebular abundance determination. For R143, our coronographic images (see Figure 2) show two separate features: a number of filaments, which may be associated with R143 or the underlying HII region, and a compact inner nebula that will be the target of our observations. Parker et al. (1993) speculated that the resolved R143 nebulosities might entirely be due to the surrounding H II region. However, our new coronographic images demonstrate the association of the nebulosities with R143 itself. We require 4 CVZ orbits per object to perform the described observing sequence: GS acquisition: 12 min; target acquisition: 56 min; stellar spectra at 7 positions along the slit: 7 * (12 min overhead + 0.5 min exposure) = 87.5 min; nebular spectra: 12 min + 120 min + 30 min = 162 min. Total per object: 5.3 h. This corresponds to 3.3 CVZ orbits. We request 4 orbits to accommodate small overheads due to off-setting, etc. Any remaining time in the orbit will be filled by increasing the exposure times. The grand total for all three objects is 12 CVZ orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- All targets are in the CVZ. We will monitor the 3 targets photometrically before and during the HST observations. The objects are known for brightness variations of a few tenths of a magnitude on timescales of months to years. R127 in particular brightened by 2 mag in the early 1980's and has been bright since then. Comparison with the photometric behavior of other LBV's suggests that R127 will become fainter again --- if it should vary at all. We are addressing this issue since R127 is within 1 mag of the bright object limit of the FOS with the high-dispersion grating. Although R127 will not pose an overlight problem, we will take all precautions to eliminate even the slightest risk for the safety of the FOS.
