Free format text (please update) We will exploit the unique properties of the GHRS and push the limits of stellar imaging to its next logical point by obtaining 2-D images of a late-type star in consecutive atmospheric layers. We propose to observe V824 Ara (HD155555) at Mg II and C IV wavelengths over one complete rotation in order to construct 2-D maps of the uneven heating distribution in the chromosphere. We also plan to map the corona by observing the Fe XXI 1356Angstrom line. Fe XXI observations of targets like V824 Ara with adequate S/N for mapping were not possible prior to the servicing mission. Combined with ground based optical and radio observations we will be able to, for the first time, obtain a comprehensive 2-D map of the photosphere, chromosphere and corona of V824 Ara at a single epoch. The GHRS will be used in rapid mode during the Fe XXI observations in order to temporally resolve any flares that might be observed while at the same time allowing us to remove such transients from our imaging data. Since the target lies within HST's CVZ we will be able to obtain excellent phase resolution, and hence spatial resolution, while using the telescope in an extremely efficient fashion. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: NOTE: These 26 orbits MUST be contiguous. Once the program begins it MUST be followed through to the end. The target acqs that have been added in between are mainly for NSSC1 memory problems - they are not to be broken up for any reason. NOTE: We are requesting a base 2 guide star acq for the very first acq, i.e. we want to allow for TWO guide star pairs rather than the default of one. NOTE: We are coordinating these observations with ground based ones which are very important. Therefore of the 3 CVZ windows that RPS2 identifies for this program we request that the early May 1996 one be selected. Ground based proposals are pending for this time frame. As an emergency backup, the late June window may be used, but this should be considred dire. If for some reasons these windows do NOT work, contact me ASAP!!! It is not clear at this time whether RPS2 can handle such a large block of CVZ observations. Therefore, an attempt was made to get it as close to reality as possible. However, things like the SAA could not be planned for. The NSSC fills up requiring a target ACQ to flush the memory before. Should this not work, or changes in the space craft force changes here is the full outline of the observing program: The sequence is simple: 1) Wave calibration for CIV (G160M) 2) Observation at CIV (G160M) 3) Wave calibration at MgII (ECH-B) 4) Observation at MgII (ECH-B) 5) Wave calibration at FeXXI (G160M) 6) Two exposures at FeXXI (G160M) Wave cals should always PRECEED the science observation but can be put after in emergency, This sequence will be repeated over and over filling the 26 orbits. When SAA passage interfers the sequence can be broken up but then should resume where it was left off. If something forces a break between the two exposures at FeXXI then it should be of the form: 6a) Wave alibration at FeXXI (G160M) 6b) Observation at FeXXI (G160M) INTERUPTION 6c) Wave alibration at FeXXI (G160M) 6d) Observation at FeXXI (G160M) All the exposures (not counting the wave calibrations) can be expanded to fill gaps as needed. There should be enough time to do 13-14 observations at each CIV, MgII and FeXXI. These can be expanded to fill any small gaps. In short, the longer the exposure times the better. The target acqs are put in to clear the NSSC memmory. For these, we only desire a 3x3 and a single guide star pair acq. (Hmmm, not sure how to work this out - may need to discuss this since what happens if one pair fails, can we tell the subsequent acqs to use a given pair?). All ACCUMs should have the default step-time of 0.2 s. Every other visit I want a an image of the aperture to verify pointing. When the final schedule is built I may relax this. Real_Time_Justification: We selected V824 Ara because it falls in the CVZ. While it is not particularly critical when the observations are taken it is very important that once they do begin that the star is followed through one complete rotation. Allowing for reacqusitions where needed after interruption by the SAA (i.e., in 5 of the 8 affected orbits where the FGS's must be shut down during SAA Model 2 passage) our proposed observing sequence will yield spectra at approximately 15 rotational phases. The target, V824 Ara, has a RA of 17 hours and Delta of -66. According to orbital calculations by D. Taylor of STScI there are 3 CVZ windows for this target with durations of 4-7 days.
