Free format text (please update) Zeta Aur is a long period (972 day) binary containing a K supergiant and a B dwarf. In Cycle 2 we observed with the GHRS the last eclipse of the B dwarf by the K star's wind and chromosphere. An analysis of these spectra have lead us to a significantly improved understanding of how the K star wind flows from the binary system. A low density stagnation region forms in front of the binary system which periodically becomes an H II region as the B star moves in front of the K star, and the wind shows much lower turbulence velocities than previously inferred from IUE data. Unfortunately the HST data have also emphasised just how complex this process really is and the high degree of asymmetry involved. The wind outflow and orbital velocity are comparable and this leads to accelerated and stagnant zones in the flow, which is itself modulated by the varying separation of the two stars. We propose to observe during and near the next eclipse centered on December 1 1995, so that new observations can be obtained to help answer some of the questions raised as a result of our analysis and modeling. The main objectives of this proposal are to (1) measure the turbulence and N_e of the K star chromosphere during eclipse, (2) determine the stability of the system from orbit-to-orbit, (3) measure the symmetry of the K star atmosphere, (4) determine the ISM column density and reddening, and (5) measure the turbulence in the K star wind. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Zeta Aurigae is a spectroscopic binary and is not resolved. We will acquire the B star with the N1 mirror (and K star in eclipse with N2). For Echelle observations we shall use the SSA, while the first order grating swillbe used with the LSA. After completion of the Side 1 observations we will move to Side 2 during the occultation period. The FP-SPLIT will be used for each exposure to keep the fixed pattern noise from dominating the S/N of the spectra. WAVE exposures are used before certain Echelle and radial velocity exposures to ensure maximum accuracy in the wavelength scale. The sub-exposures will be limited to a maximum of 5-7 minutes to avoid geomagnetic effects (GIMP). Each phase consists of one visit and the associated overhead are included. We calculate that the project will require total number of 15 orbits Cycle 5 (12) + Cycle 6 (3). *** CYCLE 5 (Phase 0.957) The Echelle-A exposure at 1650 A will be used to resolve the tangentially turbulent broadened Fe II absorption lines. The other exposures are to provide continuity with the Cycle 2 observations. The short G140L exposure has been included in all phases to map the Raleigh scattering out of and into the line of sight. *** CYCLE 5 (Phase 0.000) This phase we will observe both intrinsic chromospheric K star emission and B star photons scattered into the line of sight. The K star emission lines are chosen to be optically thin to avoid contamination from the B star. The Ech-B exposure will observe the optically thin C II intersystem multiplet, which will enable us to measure the electron density from the different flux ratios and provide information the K star turbulence. The G200M exposure will observe the narrow chromospheric intersystem S I 1900 and 1914 lines and enable us to determine the maximum temperature of the stellar wind by observing the optically thin Si III 1892 and C III 1909 lines. This exposure will also measure re-emission in Fe III uv34 1895, 1914 and 1926 A. *** CYCLE 5 (Phase 0.045) These exposures are made at a similar projected height (impact parameter) above the K star as at Phase 0.957. These are a subset of the Phase 0.957 exposures to measure the symmetry of the K stars atmosphere. The Ech-A spectra centered on the the Cl I 1347 line will resolve the ISM component from the atmospheric component. This observation complements the same exposure at Phase 0.265. *** CYCLE 6 (Phase 0.265) This Phase has been chosen to measure the interstellar Cl I 1347.24 line. We will first make a WAVE and then use the Echelle-A to obtain maximum velocity information.
