Free format text (please update) Gamma Draconis is the first, normal, single late K giant (K5 III) located on the red side of the coronal ``dividing line'' that shows conclusive evidence for hot (~ 10^5 K) transition region (TR) and coronal plasma. Gamma Dra also has a cool stellar wind with a peak outflow velocity of 70 kms. This star is the first convincing example of a luminosity class III hybrid-chromosphere star that is not part of a binary system. We propose to measure the physical properties of the TR and wind of Gamma Dra by observing emission lines reflecting the electron density and atmospheric dynamics using the GHRS. Gamma Dra allows us to study stellar atmospheric properties at the lowest levels of magnetic activity observable. Density-sensitive lines of O IV, OV, Si III, and C III will be used to estimate the TR electron density, while the C II intersystem multiplet will give chromospheric densities. These optically-thin emission lines are also accurate tracers of turbulent and flow velocities. Characteristics of the wind flow will be measured using the absorption features seen in Fe II emission lines with a variety of optical depths. These results will be compared with our earlier observations of coronal and non-coronal cool stars. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The observations will all be obtained using GHRS Side 2 and the G160M, G200M, G270M, and ECH-B Gratings. Details are given in the Table below. The signal-to-noise values are given per diode. For the TR lines a S/N ~15- 20 is sought for the stronger lines and ~ 10 for the weaker lines. The density-sensitive O IV lines will have S/N between 5 and 9. A S/N value of >= 40 is necessary to get a good fit to the absorption structure in the Fe II lines, if it is present. The 2345, 2610, and 2754 A exposures are higher priority than the 2850 A exposure. We will obtain all of the exposures in 5 -7 minute repeated ACCUM's to allow the removal of a geomagnetic and thermal drifts and preserve the highest accuracy of the wavelength/velocity scale. ___________________________________________________________________ Ion Grating Wavelength count exposure S/N (A) rate (min) ___________________________________________________________________ O IV], Si IV G160M 1377-1411 0.12 (Si IV 1401) 54 10 0.02 (O IV 1404 ) 5 O V], H LyAlpha G160M 1204-1240 0.08 (Si III 1206) 40 10 Si III, N V 0.07 (N V 1238) 6 C IV, CO G160M 1530-1566 0.19 (C IV 1548) 47 15 Si III], C III] G200M 1880-1920 0.26 47 14 C II], Fe II G270M 2345 0.5 22 62 Fe II G270M 2610 1.0 27 49 Fe II G270M 2754 1.5 11 61 Mg I, Fe I G270M 2850 2.5 11 38 Mg II ECH-B 2800 64 4,2 85 __________________________________________________________________ Real_Time_Justification: None. None. Calibration_Justification: We include three WAVE observations (lines 8, 48, and 78) immediately prior to spectra for which the highest achievable wavelength accuracy is required. These spectra are the most vital for determining the absolute velocities of TR and chromospheric emission lines. There should be NO carrousel motion or long (e.g. Earth occultations) between these WAVE spectra and the following stellar spectra. Additional_Comments: Fixed_Targets !
