Free format text (please update) With HST observations of a rare and fortuitous sample of 6 nearby Pleiades Moving Group members, we can define the (currently unknown) upper atmospheric structure of a cool star at the point of hydrogen ignition, many years before transition region and coronal spectroscopy can be done on the nearest cluster zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) stars, the Pleiades early K dwarfs. The 6 target stars are so valuable because they comprise a homogeneous sample: all are between spectral types K0 V and K2 V, confirmed single, with log Li abundances between 2.5 and 3.2 (typical of Pleiades cluster K dwarfs), and U, V, W space motions consistent with the Pleiades Moving Group. Thus, the stars have the same age, mass, and temperature: the only variable is rotation, which ranges between 8 hr and 6.6 d. Because rotation is widely thought to be the controlling parameter governing atmospheric activity, semi-empirical Volume Emission Measure (VEM) modelling of the GHRS (and our EUVE) data will be used to address such fundamental questions as: 1) ZAMS atmospheric structure as a function of rotation; 2) the physical meaning of saturation; and 3) angular momentum loss (the spin-down process). The observations are a mixture of medium resolution (0.07 - 0.09 A) spectra to provide emission line profiles and low resolution (0.6 A) spectra to provide line fluxes. At the peak of the Mg II and H Lyman-Alpha lines, S/N ~ 50; for the Si IV and C IV lines, S/N ~ 30. We have calculated exposure times for all the targets: the shortest (for HD 82558) and longest (for HD 197890 and HD 1405) define the range in exposure times in the table above. Contrary to the comments of the Cycle 4 panel, the ISM will not be a problem: these are nearby stars, and we have a good idea of the column to them. Furthermore, either wind or activity-related mass loss will appear as high velocity features (> 100 kms: e.g., Jeffries 1993), and distinct from low velocity ISM absorption. We cannot prioritize the targets because the scientific questions can only be answered by intercomparing homogeneous observations and model atmosphere results for all 6 stars; no 1 star, or subset of the group, can cover all the science. HD 1405 and HD 82558 are required to address possible differences in internal structure and, along with Speedy Mic, define the physical conditions of saturated atmospheres. Speedy Mic (P_rot = 8 hr; vsin(i) = 125 kms) is the critical target for the investigation of mass loss since it must lose more angular momentum than the other stars to reach low rotation rates by Hyades age. The H alpha transients seen by Jeffries (1993) from Speedy Mic were detected on all three of their observing days, so the chances are good that the GHRS observation will catch an event. The remaining 3 stars are the minimum needed for a first order understanding of rotation-governed atmospheric structure. Real_Time_Justification: None. We are currently obtaining EUVE coronal spectroscopy of the stars: HD 220140 was observed in Nov. 1993, and HD 17925 and HD 82443 are approved AO2 targets. We are proposing HD 1405 for AO3 (Oct. 1994). HD 82558 was observed by another group, and we will analyze that data when it is public. Speedy Mic is unfortunately too faint for EUVE . We will attempt to schedule EUVE observations for approved AO2 targets HD 17925, HD 82443 around the HST observations in order to get contemporaneous chromospheric, TR, and coronal spectral diagnostics. We will do the same for AO3 proposed target HD 1405. IUE observations have also been proposed during the 18th year (1994-1995) for these 3 stars, and we will try to schedule these simultaneously with HST .
