Abstract We request HST time in order to obtain a spectrum of Procyon B in a variety of wavelength ranges with the FOS. This spectrum will complement cycle 4 photometry done with WF/PC-2 and will allow us to determine the temperature and chemical composition of this critically important star. Procyon B is one of a handful of white dwarf stars which are in a visual binary system. These data will allow us to place Procyon B on the mass-radius relation, testing our concept of relativistic degeneracy. Furthermore, since the age of the system is known, we can determine the mass of Procyon B's progenitor star and thus provide an important fundamental datum to test theories of stellar mass loss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6061( 12) - 12/18/95 15:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This is a very difficult observation, as Procyon A, one of the brightest stars in the sky, is only 5 arc-seconds away. We do not wish to damage the FOS, so the FOS team will have final approval of our observing strategy. Our approach is to observe long enough to obtain very high S/N spectra (S/N = 100). Given the difficulty of this observation, it seems sensible to make a small investment of time and do it right on the first try. We allow 2.5 orbits for target acquisition, making allowance for an interactive acquisition, and for the necessity of using the 0.3 arc second aperture to minimize scattered light. We also set aside one orbit to measure the background, we hope to use the paired square apertures to measure star and background simultaneously. Five gratings settings are required to observe the full ultraviolet and visible spectral range. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The proximity of Procyon A requires an interactive acquisition.
