N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Abstract Recent work has shown that nebular abundances can be in error by as much as a factor of five, possibly due to unexplained temperature fluctuations. We propose a broad program of observations of the benchmark Orion Nebula, with the common theme of understanding the origin of physical conditions on the microscopic scale within this well-observed nebula. We will determine abundances of refractory elements as a function of ionization stage (nebular position). This will allow us to determine the extent of grain destruction and the effects on the thermal balance of the gas. Absorption line studies will permit a more realistic representation of the geometry/density distribution needed for our detailed models. Depending on the actual location of the absorbing matter, abundance assessments may be possible to compare with those deduced from the emission lines. We plan to investigate physical conditions within wind-induced morphology, recently identified, to determine the effects of mechanical heating. The unique resolution of HST will be used to examine Orion on a fine scale to investigate if unresolved (from the ground) ``hot spots'' are present. High excitation lines in the UV (eg. OIII]1663, NII]2142, [FeIV]2836 Angstrom) will permit the measurement of T_e fluctuations for ions never before possible, leading to information on how these depend on the level of ionization or excitation of the gas. All of these goals have as a common underpinning -- understanding the conditions within the nebula and the physical origin of the inferred T_e variations, and finding a prescription for determining reliable nebular abundances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6056( 8) - 09/12/95 12:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have 5 facets to proposed program -- primary observations with GHRS, FOS, and WFPC2 are 3 of these. A fourth is parallel coordinated WFPC2 with the FOS. The fifth is different in that we are requesting parallel coordinated FOS data be taken along with the primary WFPC2 observations approved by one of us (O'Dell) as a new Cycle 5 proposal GO5976 (``Herbig-Haro objects near the Orion Nebula"). A similar opportunity was granted this group in Cycle 4 for parallel FOS along with O'Dell's GTO primary WFPC2. GHRS Spectra ------------ We propose GHRS observations at position 1SW. This is near our Cycle 3 posn. 1 (see Figure) and has been defined to take advantage of higher flux in NII 6584 learned from recent WFPC2 F658N image (O'Dell & Wen 1994) to maximize S/N in NII 2140--43 Angstrom. The spectra are chosen to further elucidate lines from our Cycle 3 FOS work, that we described above as most interesting in terms of the science proposed and our ongoing HST studies of Orion. All HRS spectra are to be taken with G270M. (1) N II] 2139.68, 2143.45 Angstrom: grating G270M, R = 20200, bandpass ~ 46 Angstrom, sensitivity = 11.7E11 (counts s^-1 diode^-1 per incident (erg s^-1 cm^-2 Angstrom ^-1)). We use our observed FOS flux of the blended pair = 1.36E-14 (ergs s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2) (Rubin et al. 1994), and from atomic physics, assume the 2139 line flux is ~ 30% of the total. Then a S/N = 10 for the weaker line is reached in 6230 sec. (2) [O II] 2470 Angstrom: This line is needed in the same position/aperture as the N II lines. All time estimates here use flux values from Table 1 in Rubin et al. (1994) unless stated otherwise. S/N = 30 is reached in only 6 min. (3) [Fe IV] 2836, 2830 and Mg II 2796, 2803 Angstrom (abs): These can be done in the same bandpass 2793.3 - 2838.8 Angstrom. We were advised by David Soderblom (STScI) that 2816.1 Angstrom is nearest mod 4 carrousel posn. for centering expected 45.5 Angstrom bandpass. We desire central absorption line velocities to ~ 2 kms and will do a WAVECAL preceding this spectrum and that in (4) below. Dr. Soderblom advised us this should provide wavelength accuracy well under 1 kms. S/N = 30 or better is calculated for 2836 and the Mg II lines in 115 min. (4) [Fe IV] 2568.2 and Fe II 2600.173 Angstrom (abs): These can be done in the same bandpass centered at 2584 Angstrom. In addition, there are 3 other absorption lines of interest (Mn II, Fe II) between 2568-- 2600 A. We need 76 min. for S/N =10. FOS Spectra ----------- Higher T_e regions in the nebula that are driven by wind-shocks might show relatively stronger [OIII] lines relative to HI, [NII], or [SII] lines due to a combination of higher T_e (important relative to HI) and higher ionization (important relative to N^+ and S^+). Towards our goal of trying to ascertain the nature of T_e fluctuations in Orion, we searched for regions which had strong relative [OIII] ratios and were morphologically indicative of arcs or filaments. Three such regions were identified and are labeled X1, X2, and X3 in the Figure. X2 is chosen because of its arc -like nature and the fact that O'Dell's WFPC2 images indicate the spectrum will be dominated by emission from the arc rather than low ionization background/foreground matter. We can use the same offset star Parenago 1869 for X2 and 1SW. While the [OIII] 5007 Angstrom surface brightness at X2 is comparable to 1SW, its surface brightness in HAlpha is only half of 1SW, and that of [NII] and [SII] lower by a factor of ~3. Therefore, we propose to take an identical set of FOS spectra of X2, as for 1SW, for which we would expect the surface brightness (and S/N) of the UV lines of OIII 1660--6, NIII 1747-- 54, and CIII 1907--9 to be higher than at 1SW, because we expect T_e of X2 to be higher than 1SW by about 1500 K (roughly 10,000 K compared with 8500 K for 1SW). The surface brightness of the above-doubly ionized lines in X2 will be 3- -5 times higher relative to the HI lines and continuum, thus easily detectable in a 50min G190H exposure. We expect to be able to derive both T_e and t^2 from the ratios of 1660-6/4363/5007. We will use FOS/RD with 5 gratings (G190H, G270H, G400H, G570H, G780H) and 1.0 circular aperture at position 1SW and X2. This will give total coverage from 1650--8000 Angstrom. Based on our WFPC2 imagery, we calculate respective exposure times (in min.) as (50, 20, 6, 4, 1). A safe 4-stage ~45 min peakup for the offset star is planned. WFPC2 (primary) - -------------- We propose using a single field center 5:32:48 -5:26:00 (1950) and three filters, F547M, F502N, and F487N for 200, 300, and 300 seconds respectively. This should give a total signal for H Beta of ~2000 counts and allow accurate subtraction of the continuum contribution to this filter. This overlaps with the fields being covered by O'Dell's Cycle 4 GTO program and John Bally's Cycle 4 GO program, but in neither case is the F487N filter being used. We will include another pair of F502N images in order to have exactly the same field and resolution as in the F487N and F547M filter images. Comparison of the H Beta and O'Dell's H Alpha fields permits derivation of point-to-point reddening via H Alpha/H Beta, which is important for making small-scale extinction corrections to line ratios involving lines over a large wavelength range. If highly deviant temperatures exist, we would expect to see this as local fluctuations in the 5007/H Beta ratio, which is ideal, because it is very insensitive to variable reddening in Orion. All our proposed and previous HST spectroscopic fields will be covered with any orientation. WFPC2 (coordinated parallel with FOS) ------------------------------------- We have successfully operated in this mode augmenting O'Dell's Orion imagery program (see section below). Coordinated parallel observations in the F656N, F658N, F502N, F547M, and F673N will fall on the nearby HII region M43 and the position angles have been carefully selected to allow these fields to abut those imaged as parallel observations in the John Bally Cycle 4 FOS program (those parallel WFPC2 images have been reduced and are being analyzed by O'Dell). FOS (coordinated parallel with WFPC2 O'Dell Cycle 5 GO program) ----------------------------------------- ---------------------- This mode has been approved previously for us along with the Cycle 4 Orion GTO program of O'Dell. It is not a problem for us to find an orientation that guarantees there are no bright stars in the FOS 4.3" aperture at the parallel FOS field, which we have done. In conjunction with O'Dell's Cycle 5 GO5976 program, we propose here to use the parallel time for FOS spectra to augment the science under this program. Parallel positions will be observed with G270H at NO additional HST time and have already been submitted as part of the GO5976 program. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Much data obtained from ground-based and space-borne imagery & spectroscopy of Orion -- made by team members during more than a decade -- supports the proposed program. These include ground-based CCD imagery, IUE spectra, longslit CCD low and moderate dispersion spectra, coude and echelle spectra, and KAO far-infrared spectroscopy. Much of this is ongoing. For instance, Baldwin/Dufour/O'Dell/Walter continue to obtain ground-based spectra of Orion and will support the proposed observations with ground-based spectroscopy of our program positions during the 1994/5 observing season at CTIO, McDonald, KPNO, and SPM(Mex.).
