Free format text (please update) We will use the FOS to observe UV emission lines of carbon from H II regions in the spiral galaxies NGC 2403 and M101; this program was awarded observing time with medium priority in Cycle 3, but of six scheduled observations, only one was obtained before the HST refurbishment. These measurements, combined with corresponding optical spectra, will be used to derive carbon abundances and C/O ratios. Our measurements will provide the first reliable sample of data on carbon abundances in spiral galaxies. We will use the derived abundances to study the time evolution of C/O across the galaxies and compare the results with those obtained from observations of metal-poor irregular galaxies obtained by us in Cycle 2, and with theoretical predictions for the behavior of C/O in spirals. In particular, we will make detailed comparisons between the behavior of C, N, He, and O in the outer parts of the spirals with that observed in irregular galaxies of similar abundances; such comparison will tell us if the evolution of the outer disks of spirals has proceeded in similar fashion as for the irregulars. We will compare the gradients for C and N across the galaxies to obtain an improved estimate of the fraction of N produced by primary nucleosynthesis. Finally, we will take deep HAlpha and O III images in parallel with the FOS observations to study the structure of the ionized gas in these galaxies at high resolution. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will use FOS/RD with the 0sec point 86 circular aperture to measure the UV emission lines C III 1907, 1909Angstrom\ and C II 2324-2329 Angstrom\ in six giant H II regions in NGC 2403 and M101, using G190H and G270H. We will also obtain short exposure spectra of each region with G400H and G570H, from which we will measure line strengths for HBeta, HAlpha, O II 3727, and O III 5007 Angstrom. The optical spectra, taken through the same aperture as the UV spectra, will provide the correct photometric scaling between the UV line fluxes and the optical line fluxes, and allow us to measure the appropriate interstellar reddening. Then, using physical conditions derived from ground-based optical data, we will determine gas-phase abundances for C^++, C^+, O^+, and O^++ from the FOS spectra. By combining the UV spectral data with excellent ground-based optical spectra and photoionization modeling, we can derive accurate C/O abundance ratios. The results from our Cycle 2 program (Garnett et al. 1994) demonstrate that we can predict the necessary amount of observing time with confidence. The extended emission-line targets will be acquired as in Cycle 2, with blind offsets from nearby stars, determined from ground-based HAlpha imaging. As in Cycle 2, we derive exposure times based on estimates of the UV emission line using measured optical line fluxes, assuming a solar C/O ratio, while UV continuum fluxes are estimated from the optical continuum and the HBeta equivalent width. Relatively long exposure times are required; UV emission lines are high-excitation and therefore weak compared to optical lines, and the UV lines are superposed on a much stronger continuum. We require S/N ratios of 5-10 for the emission lines to derive useful abundances. Table 1 lists estimated exposure times in G190H and G570H; exposure times for G270H and G400H will be comparable to those for G190H and G570H, respectively. Following the spectroscopic observations, a one-minute white light exposure through the 3sec point 7 aperture will be obtained to verify the pointing. During the long G190H and G270H exposures, we will take deep F502N and F656N images with WFPC2 plus short F555W and F675W images in parallel for each field. We expect to obtain 20-40 minute total exposures (2-4 frames) in each narrow-band filter for each field. Real_Time_Justification: NGC 2403 lies in a zone with 11 CVZ opportunities, the maximum number available in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, we have planned our observations of NGC 2403 on that basis. Utilizing the CVZ allows us to reduce our request from 23 orbits to 17 orbits. For our six targets in Table 1, we have excellent ground- based optical spectra, some already published (e.g., Torres- Peimbert et al. 1989). These deep spectra provide accurate fluxes for weak lines, such as the temperature sensitive O III 4363 Angstrom\ line, from which we can accurately derive interstellar reddening, nebular physical conditions, and oxygen abundances. PC and LS are aware of these unresolved problems, and have advised submission of proposal as is for now. As a result, the number of orbits calculated by RPS2 now exceed the number that should be allocated. Denise I have adjusted FOS exposure times for visits 4-6 to account for additional overhead due to the parallels; however, I am uncertain if these adjustments are sufficient. They may need to be adjusted further when we see how the coordinated parallels fit in. I have also split the G190H exposure for visit 3, and added another WFPC F656N parallel exposure into that sequence.
