Observations with the FOS during the week of the impact revealed large changes to the chemical composition of the atmosphere at the impact sites. The regions of the Jovian atmosphere perturbed by the impacts should undergo dynamical evolution in the form of latitudinal spreading and chemical evolution initiated by photolysis of the newly formed species. We will observe these changes by measuring the chemical abundances at the impact latitude as a function of time. We will, for the first time, determine the correlation between gas and aerosols in the perturbed atmosphere. This program will result in an improved knowledge of the characteristics of the impacts, the rate of vertical and meridional transport in the Jovian atmosphere, and the nature of sulfur chemistry in the Jovian atmosphere. Questions Observing_Description: Our program proposes to use broad wavelength coverage with the FOS at moderate resolution and several viewing geometries to follow the long-term evolution of stratospheric absorbers discovered following the SL9 impacts in 1994. We need a long baseline for the observations (hence time critical observations are requested in February and November 1996) because of the long time constants in the stratosphere. Two sets of the requested observations (visits 1+2 and visits are identical to those previously performed in 1994 and 1995. All FOS observations will be done using the FOS red detector, and the 1'' round aperture. SPECIAL NOTES for VISITS 1+2 and 6+7: For these two sets of observations what we want to do is observe the SAME longitude in two visits separated by one orbit. The intent of the observations is to follow the SAME LONGITUDE from near the central meridian of the planet to the planet limb. The first visit in these sets specifies that the observation begin with the longitude of observation within 25 degrees of the central meridian. With the two visits separated by one orbit, the second visit in each set will occur near the limb. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE EXACT LONGITUDE OF THE OBSERVATION IS COMPLETELY ARBITRARY. WE DO NOT CARE WHAT THE LONGITUDE IS, BUT THE PHASE II SPECIFICATION DOES NOT ALLOW FOR USE OF AN ARBITRARY LONGITUDE. However, it may be possible to change the longitude post-facto in trans, i.e., when a good window is found for ANY longitude, we are happy to simply change the longitude in the phase ii submission. Use of a specific longitude for targets 1 and 2 will make the possible scheduling windows very narrow, and will make the observations very difficult to schedule unless we can somehow use an arbitrary longitude for these targets. The PI expects to work closely with the PC Tony Roman to make sure that this is clear. Real_Time_Justificattion: The two 2-orbit sequences of center to limb mappings (visits1+2; and visits 6+7) should be done once as soon as possible when Jupiter emerges from solar avoidance in February 1996, and once as late as possible before Jupiter disappears into solar avoidance in November 1996. The other visits for Callisto observations and limb and pole pointings for Jupiter do not have specific timing requirements.
