Contact: Abstract: We propose to test and refine a new evolutionary scenario for very massive stars ( M>40 Msun) by constructing an empirical isochrone of the dense stellar cluster, R136a, in the LMC. The isochrone will be based on stellar and wind parameters derived from GHRS and FOS spectra of individual stars in the cluster. The isochrone age will be given by the positions of pre-main sequence stars on the HR diagram. The metal content (Z) will be determined directly from GHRS spectra of the less luminous stars in R136a having weak winds. We will construct evolutionary models for each star observed. By requiring that the model match the observed characteristics of each star at the specified cluster age and iron abundance, we will obtain a finely tuned grid of evolutionary models for massive stars. The results of this program should have major consequences for studies of stellar populations with massive stars and for stellar evolution. Questions Observing_Description: Selection of Targets. GHRS/G140L spectra of four bright objects in R136a, namely R136a1, -a2, -a3, and -a5, have already been obtained. We now need to extend the isochrone down to O8 V stars, because such stars should have weak winds, and thus, be most amenable to photospheric abundance analysis; and their surfaces abundances should reflect the medium out of which they formed (no mixing should have yet occurred). We further require that the stars can be isolated in the GHRS SSA (0.22'' across). The observing list (page 2) below satisfies these criteria. Observing Strategy. We plan four CVZ observing visits to R136a: three for GHRS spectroscopy, and one for FOS spectroscopy. In the three GHRS visits (each 9 CVZ orbits long), we will make all the GHRS/G140L observations on all program stars. In the four visit (7 CVZ orbits long), we will make the FOS observations. The Detailed Observing Program (p. 2) gives the Visit \\# for each star. Since all the targets are so close together, a single guide-star pair will suffice for the whole visit. After guide-star acquisition, we will proceed with target acquisition into the small aperture. Depending on the visit, we will use either R136B or R136a1 as the target-acquisition star. Using the coordinates of Malumuth and Heap (1994) as a guide, we will make blind offsets to each of the program stars for spectral observation. We have already demonstrated (Heap et al. 1994) that it is possible to acquire and obtain spectra of individual stars in R136a without significant contamination from neighboring stars. Upon completing the exposures on one star, the telescope will slew to the next. (We assume an overhead of 4 minutes for small slews.) There is no need to use an integral number of orbits on a given star, so observing efficiency is maximized. Exposure Times. GHRS. For each star observed by GHRS, we will obtain two spectral segments, centered on 1300 Angstrom\\ and 1610 Angstrom, so as to get near-continuous coverage from 1150-1750 Angstrom. This spectral region contains important the wind lines as well as a strongly Fe-blanketed region around 1400 Angstrom. Scaling from our GHRS/COSTAR/G140L observations of R136a5, we estimate that a V=15 star in R136a will produce a count-rate of 0.168 cnt/s/d at Lambda_c=1300 Angstrom\\ and 0.087 cnt/s/d at Lambda_c=1610 Angstrom. Hence, it will take t=100 and 190 min to get G140L/SSA spectra at S/N=33 for Lambda_c=1300Angstrom\\ and 1610Angstrom\\ respectively. FOS. In the last CVZ visit, we will make all the FOS/G400H,G570H observations. The FOS spectra, which contains the H Balmer lines as well as numerous He II and He I lines, should yield an accurate determination of the He abundance and thus, will help constrain the mass-loss rate. We assume that a V=15 star observed in the 0.3'' aperture will produce 2.32 cnt/s/d at either G400H or G570H. Hence, it will take t=18 min to get a spectrum at S/N=50. The spectra should have a resolution (FWHM) of about 200 kms, which is sufficient for our needs. Real_Time_Justification: Effectively, there is only one target, R136a. Because of its coordinates, Alpha =5:30, Delta=-69, it is ideally suited as a CVZ target.
