Free format text (please update) Aim of this project is to obtain HST images in the V and R bands of elliptical galaxies in two clusters at redshifts 0.3-0.4. The photometric parameters (Re and SBe) and the color gradients of these Es will be derived. Together with spectroscopic data we collected from the ground (velocity dispersions and line strengths of Mg, Fe, H-Beta for 20 objects), this will allow us to investigate the evolution in the structure parameters of cluster Es with redshift. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will image the cluster MS1512 in the V and R bands, and Abell 370 in the R band. All of the ellipticals of the clusters we have spectroscopic measurements of will fit on one single WFPC2 frame. We estimate that 1.5 hours exposure time per filter will allow us to reach a signal to noise ratio large enough to determine reliable color gradients out to Re, if the CCD flattening is good to 2-3 percent. We will split the 1.5 hours per filter in 9 exposures of approximately 10 minutes each, fitting into 3 orbits. The multiple exposures will allow us a reliable identification of cosmic rays even at the faint end tail of the distribution (Keel & Windhorst 1993, AJ 106, 455). We expect to measure R_e to 7 percent (Saglia et al. 1995, in preparation). The calibration of the images will be obtained using already secured ground based images in the V and R bands and the color transformations provided by the WFPC2 Instrument Handbook. The zero-points should be determined to better than 0.05 mag. In this way, given the typical 8-10 percent accuracy of the central velocity dispersion, measurement errors on the FP zero- points should be less than the expected scatter (in Coma less than 0.06 per object, or 12 percent of the distance (see Saglia et al. 1993 MNRAS 264, 961).
