Free format text (please update) S0 galaxies as a class have received little attention and yet many fundamental questions remain concerning their nature. Their central regions are poorly understood because of limited resolution from ground-based observations, and yet these regions may contain vital clues about the nature and evolution of S0s and their relationship to spiral and elliptical galaxies. Interpretation of spectroscopic data in particular has been hampered by uncertainties about the light distribution at small radii. We propose a SNAPSHOT PC imaging survey of the cores of 40 nearby E/S0, S0 and S0/a galaxies, selected to cover a large range in luminosity. The goal of this project is to characterize the nuclei of such galaxies over a broad range of luminosities and within a variety of environments (field, Virgo and Fornax). These data will provide both qualitative and quantitative information on nuclear profiles and the presence of nuclear cusps, young and old stellar condensations, inner stellar disks and dust distribution in the central regions of these enigmatic galaxies. We will compare these properties to those of ellipticals and spiral galaxies, which have been well- studied with HST. These data will provide a first step towards establishing the frequency or ubiquity of black holes in the centers of disk galaxies. There is a significant possibility of discovery of unusual features that will merit follow-up study by the community. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: This project is a survey of nuclei of nearby S0 galaxies. We wish to obtain the surface brightness profile of the nucleus and to identify unusual nuclear condensations (e.g., star forming clumps), nuclear point sources, compact stellar or gaseous disks and bars, and dust lanes on subarcsecond scales. In these early-type galaxies, the central surface brightnesses are high and so relatively short exposures (~100s) are adequate. We ask for two well- calibrated, high-throughput passbands (F814W and F555W) in order to clearly differentiate dust from stellar features and to identify active star-forming regions. We have based our observing strategy on experience from the \#GO5446 program. Observations will be made in SNAPSHOT mode using the PC. Exposure times totalling 320 sec (F814W) and 160 sec (F555W) are requested. Scaling from values in the WFPC-2 Instrument Handbook shows that the F814W exposures should give the same (adequate) S/N as in the \#GO5446 program's F606W images. We wish to CR-split the F814W exposures to insure cosmic ray events are not mistaken for real features. The exposure time in F555W should give roughly half the S/N, but since this image is to be used primarily in an interpretive manner the lower S/N and lack of CR-SPLIT are acceptible (the F814W images can be used to distinguish CRs from real features in this image). Instrument overheads are 5 min for the CR-SPLIT exposures and 3 min for the NO CR-SPLIT exposure, for a total of 16.0 minutes per target, including overheads. With the acquisition time of 12 min this results in a total time of 28 min, within the snapshot window. The target list was culled from the Third Reference catalog with the following constraints: S0, E/S0 or S0/a galaxy (RC2/RC3 type -3.9 to 0); B_T brighter than 14.5 and v_0<1200 km/s, augmented by a sample with B_T<12.5 and v_0 <2800 km/s. In addition, catalogs of galaxies for Fornax and Virgo were also the source of cluster galaxies for B_T<14.5. Visual inspection was used to remove galaxies with strong dust lanes. This strategy ensures that we have a good sampling of S0s in high-density as well as low density environments (cluster vs field), as well as across a broad magnitude range. However, we plan follow-up ground-based imaging of some of the galaxies to provide large-scale morphological characteristics (e.g. disk scale-lengths), as well as (ground-based) spectroscopic observations to measure velocity dispersions in morphologically interesting cases.
