Free format text (please update) We are proposing to use OB associations in M31, M33, and NGC 6822 to determine how stellar evolution proceeds for high mass stars. What mass range turns into Wolf-Rayet stars rather than red supergiants? What is the evolutionary link between WN and WC stars? How are answers to these questions affected by metallicity? Over the past decade we have completed surveys of Wolf-Rayet stars in selected OB associations of these three galaxies. We also have data for determining the red supergiant content of these same regions. Although we have obtained UBV CCD data under subarcsecond conditions, and have extensive optical spectroscopy for the bluest stars, our interpretation of our HRDs is stymied by our inability to distinguish three crowded 40Mo of similar effective temperature from a single 90Mo star. We need the 10* improvement in resolving power (compared to our best ground-based efforts) offered by the refurbished HST. Questions ! Our exposure times will be 160s, 2x400s, and 2x400s, respectively. Our observations through the F555W filter will be observed at the higher gains setting (ATD-GAIN=15) to prevent saturation on the brightest stars of interest. Real_Time_Justification: None. Additional_Comments: We are specifying the target position to put the most crowded and interesting region on PC1, and then providing a range of acceptable ORIENTation angles to get as much of the OB association on the three WF chips as possible. The RPS2 software shows that all of these can be scheduled; if the reduction in scheduling flexibility (or problem with guide stars) renders any of these unschedulable in practice, than I will have to specify aternative pointings to retain most of the field of interest.
