They can host high energy nuclei, star formation and perhaps even black holes. HST observations have established that the cores of ellipticals are related to their global properties, and so can be used as diagnostics of the physical processes occurring at the time of formation. HST images of galaxy cores have distinguished two different types of core luminosity profiles: `soft' and `hard' types. It is suggested that luminous, slowly rotating galaxies have `soft' cores and the less luminous disky galaxies have `hard' cores. This can be interpreted in terms of a formation scenario based on a merger hierarchy in which the low luminosity systems experience highly dissipative mergers, but as the luminous systems are assembled the mergers become increasingly stellar. In this picture, the type of core a galaxy generates is intimately related to its evolutionary history, i.e. the degree of interaction/merging experienced and the availability of cold gas. In turn, this should not only depend on luminosity but also on the galaxy's local environment. Here we propose to test the gaseous/stellar merger picture by imaging a set of Coma cluster ellipticals from a wide range of cluster radii. In the gas poor environment of the cluster core there may be insufficent cold gas for the low luminosity galaxies to form `hard' cores. Similarly, at the cluster turnround radius even luminous galaxies may have experienced a dissipative core formation and possess `hard' cores. Questions Observing_Description: We wish to obtain PC wide-V-band images of 49 Coma ellipticals with sufficient S/N that their luminosity profiles can be reliably measured in the central arcsecond. While this can be achieved with relatively short exposures, a major limiting factor for proposed observations are the GS ACQ (12 min) and CR-SPLIT (5 min) overheads. As our number of targets is slightly more than twice our allocated number of orbits (24), we will be observing TWO (OR THREE) TARGETS PER ORBIT. 13 of our targets have been grouped into pairs or triplets which lie within 2' of each other. These can be observed in a single orbit/visit, without having to re-aquire guide stars. The exposure times available are 800 seconds/galaxy for a pair, and 400 seconds/galaxy for a triplet. The remaining 36 targets are grouped into pairs with a greater seperation, but generally less than 20'. In this case, we require a small slew between the two targets, which we assume will take less than 5 min, followed by a guide star aquire. This allows us an integration time of 400 seconds/galaxy. As our target ellipticals are relatively bright, this integration time is well matched to our requirements. For a typical target elliptical, the V-band surface brightness at the effective radius (6") is 21.5. In a 2-pixel wide annulus at this radius we will achieve a S/N of 109 in a co-added 2x200 second image. Real_Time_Justification: As we proposed in phase I, we require two targets per orbit. This can be achieved with a SAM where the seperation between the targets is less than 2 arcmin, but most of our sample is paired into targets with a greater seperation. This means a small slew, typically less than 20 arcmin, is required mid-orbit to move to the second target. We assume this slew will take around 5 minutes. This is important, as it allows us to observe a statistically useful sample of 49 galaxies in just 24 orbits. Also, as our targets are relatively bright, a short exposure of 2x200 seconds is all we need to achieve our required S/N ratio (see above). We note that the RPS2 software does not accept more than a single visit per orbit. Therefore, we have placed each visit (from visit 7 onwards) in its own orbit, as advised, on the understanding that each pair of visits (i.e. 7/8, 9/10, ...etc) will be observed DURING A SINGLE ORBIT, thus maintaining our TAC allocation of 24 orbits. To re-inforce this requirement, we have used the visit special requirement GROUP a-b WITHIN 1 ORBIT - although, of course, RPS2 doesn't allow this when scheduling the visits.
