Free format text (please update) Building on our Cycle 4 program, we propose to obtain B and I images of a total of about 300 faint field galaxies for which we have already secured redshifts in the two deepest and most extensive ground-based redshift survey programs carried out to date. These galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.1 < z < 1.3, with a median = 0.5, corresponding to a look-back time of close to half the age of the Universe. The images will be analysed (a) to yield quantitative measurements of the scale lengths and surface brightnesses of disk and bulge components and bulge-to-disk ratios, (b) to identify the locations of star-formation within the galaxies and to search for structures like bars and spiral arms, and (c) to identify compact companions and other evidence for mergers and interactions such as tidal tails and distortions. These data will form the basis for a definitive study of the morphology of field galaxies at high redshifts and will lead to an understanding of the physical processes that have controlled the evolution of galaxies over the last 2/3 of the age of the Universe. The data will also allow us to construct a statistically-complete atlas of faint galaxy images which, with our prior knowledge of the redshifts, spectral energy distributions and space densities of the galaxies in question, will enable us to generate empirical quantitative predictions for the appearance of the deepest images that are being obtained with HST. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Each WFPC2 field, which will contain an average of 14 galaxies with spectroscopically determined redshifts, will be observed in I(F814W) and then B(F450W). The choice of B and I maximises the wavelength baseline that can be observed with high S/N with WFPC2, provides one pass-band below and one passband above the 4000 Angstrom break for all 0.1 < z < 1.0, is well-matched to our exisiting ground-based imaging and in fact is also matched to the initial selection of the objects in the LDSS-B and CFRS-I surveys. Use of the broad F450W filter over F439W is prefered on account of the 3-fold higher Q T d Lambda / Lambda product. Each filter will be used for 3 orbits each, allowing all the observations to be completed in one 6-orbit visit. Exposures will be CR-split, giving 6 exposures for CR-removal and total exposure times of 6900 (B) and 7200 seconds (I) (for equatorial fields and slightly longer for fields at higher declination). Assuming typical ecliptic latitudes giving a sky brightness of V = 23.3 mag/arcsec^2, read-noise of 5.2 e^-/read and dark current of 0.008 e^-/s/pixel, we calculate that in the WFPC frames, our images will yield S/N = 1 per pixel for surface brightness Mu(AB) = 25.5 mag/arcsec^2 in B and Mu(AB) = 25.4 mag/arcsec^2 in I (the lower background in B being compensated by lower sensitivity and increased contribution by read-noise and dark current). Galaxy disks locally have central B-band surface brightnesses Mu _AB(B) = 21.3 (Freeman's Law) and so, without evolution, would have observed Mu _AB (I) = 22.5 in the I-band at z = 0.6 (when F814W is at rest-4950 A). Thus the I-band sensitivity is sufficient to trace an unevolved disk at the typical redshifts of our program galaxies out to three scale lengths at S/N > 1 per pixel. The color of disks at these redshifts is approximately (B-I)_AB = 1, so the S/N of normal disks would be about 2.5 times lower in the B images. However, regions of vigorous star formation would have a roughly flat- spectrum, and thus be seen at comparable S/N in both images. The sensitivity to point sources within the galaxies will depend on their location since the background is dominated by the diffuse galaxy in all but the outermost regions. In "blank sky", a point source with AB = 27.6 will be detected at roughly S/N = 5 in either the B-band or I-band. In the observed I-band, this corresponds at z = 0.6 to an absolute B -magnitude (h=0.5) of approximately M_AB(B) = -16.0. Experience with the MDS and with the one I-band image that has been taken so far in our Cycle 4 program confirms that these exposure times are sufficient to meet our scientific goals. Fig. 4 shows images and residuals for two faint high redshift galaxies (at z = 0.48 and z = 0.68, and with I_AB = 21.8, i.e. within a factor 2 of our I-band survey limit). The recovered parameters from the 2-dimensional fits are entirely reasonable and the residuals from the first galaxy show clear evidence of spiral structure. These residuals will be compared with ground based images of local galaxies resampled to match the HST observations. The random effects of noise are illustrated in Fig. 3 which shows simulations in which disk scale lengths and bulge-to-total ratios are recovered from "ideal" model galaxies as they would be observed in the proposed HST program. Real_Time_Justification: There are no special scheduling requirements The proposed observations form part of a long term study of galaxy evolution carried out by the two constituent groups. This topic is the primary research interest of the proposers and the proposed data will form the basis for future ground- based work. However, no special coordination with other observations is required. These fields have been extensively studied from the ground. Deep B, V, I and K imaging in each field has been taken and was used to select objects for spectroscopic study. One of the CFRS fields has been surveyed to micro-Jy levels with the VLA and further surveys are planned in the near future in the infrared with ISO and in the millimeter and sub-millimeter wavebands with JCMT/SCUBA and OVRO. The proposers have access to forefront facilities for follow-up optical and infrared spectroscopy. We particularly plan to study the kinematics of objects using both the AAT for integrated spectroscopy and the new MOS- ARGUS integral field spectrograph on CFHT (allowing 2- dimensional spectroscopy of extended objects at 0.4 arcsec resolution). Finally, since our HST fields will be arranged along the strips of our redshift survey, it will be relatively efficient to go back and measure the redshifts of the few objects that have not had redshifts secured so far.
