Free format text (please update) We propose an extensive photometric survey of the galaxies lying behind the exceptional gravitational lens cluster A1689. The distortion of these images has been mapped from the ground, and shows the strongest signal to date, but the signal to noise is still limited. Using real WFPC2 images we show that with 2 orbits on each of 22 fields covering the cluster we will obtain ~ 10^4 galaxies over a region extending to ~ 0.9 h^-1Mpc from the cluster centre. This is a much higher surface density of objects than is feasible from the ground, and the shapes of these intrinsically small galaxies will be much better measured. With these data we will reconstruct the projected mass density to larger radii and with much greater precision and spatial resolution than hitherto possible allowing detailed measurement of the profile and subtructure in the dark matter. We will also find a substantial number of highly distorted objects lying near the critical lines, which will provide detailed information on the potential in the cluster centre. These data will provide the most precise measurement of the large-scale dark-matter distribution to date, and will place fundamental constraints on the composition of the dark matter and its relation to luminous galaxies. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose to observe 16 fields with 2 orbits per field (1 orbit in F606W and the other F814W totalling exposures per pointing) in a tesselating pattern requiring 2 orientations of 90D for 8 pointings and 270D for the other 8 pointings to provide complete coverage of a large region 7.5' by 10' extending to ~eq 880 h^-1kpc from the cluster centre. The necessary exposure time to achieve a surface density of ~eq 200 galaxies per asrcmin^2 can be calculated from our WFPC2 data. The tiling pattern efficiently coveres the area and only 2 orientations are required for the field. The brightest stars can be avoided by judicious placing of the fields and by adjusting the gap between the fields. endfigure sectionData Pipeline We have a suite of purpose built tools for analysing the data. Several other groups are in the process of developing similar software packages, but ours has some distinguishing features. One such feature is the object detection algorithm. This relies heavily on positional coincidence to remove bogus objects and yet allow us to reliably detect very faint objects. The object finder works by smoothing the image with a hierarchy of progressively larger smoothing filters and tracks the trajectories of peaks. We then pass these trajectories through a filter which applies a simple algorithm to find points of maximum significance yielding a catalogue of objects. Theoretical modelling and empirical analysis shows that achieving low noise in shape estimation depends critically on first assigning an appropriate radius to the objects. It is apparent from figure reffig:album that the hierarchical peak finder does a good job of estimating the size. The second step in the analysis is the shape determination. Here we perform accurate modelling of the local values and gradients of the sky by means of measuring modal sky values in sectors of a control annulus surrounding the target object. Shapes are measured using weighted central second moments, with the optimal weight function, and from these we can extract a quantitative measure of the gravitational distortion. The final step in the pipeline is to convert the measured distortion map to a map of the surface density. Our algorithm has been widely adopted and has been shown to give reliable results. In addition, we have developed a number of sophisticated quality control checks on the data. We have demonstrated the power of these algorithms in application to 5 clusters now. In every case we find a strong signal. We will also measure the perturbation of the counts due to the amplification. This tends to be noisier than the distortion analyis, but should be measureable in this case, and will be used to resolve the ambiguity in the baseline surface density obtained from the distortion. We will also apply a new non-linear generalisation of the KS method which will allow us to reconstruct the mass profile in the cluster centre in a non-parametric manner. par References Dekel, A., 1994.
