Free format text (please update) We propose to make WFPC2 images of both of the centers of known Herbig-Haro objects near the Orion Nebula in the two emission lines most sensitive to delineating their structure. The northern region has multiple Herbig-Haro objects appearing to have a common source, which is located at or near the BN- IRc2 source buried within the Orion Molecular Cloud-1. The southern region is near theta^2 A Ori and seems to lie well in front of the main ionization layer of the nebula. The proposed images should allow us to accurately determine the mechanisms of excitation of these Herbig-Haro objects and their interaction with the ambient nebula and cloud gas. The fact that we have a good basic understanding of the major structure of this region, that there is a concentration of at least 10 Herbig-Haro objects in this area, and there is a good knowledge of the age and distance of the associated stellar cluster makes this the most promising region for the collective study of Herbig-Haro objects. The observations proposed would be in the SII F673N and OI F631N filters and would supplement observations in OIII F502N, HI F656N, and NII F658N already scheduled for the PI's GTO program. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The observations involve pointings at both the north and south Herbig-Haro object complexes. At both pointings one orbit will be spent in imaging in F631N(OI 6300 Angstroms) and a second orbit for F673N(SII 6717+6731 Angstrom). Our previous observations in the north (600s) gave peak counts of 600 in F673N. Our previous observations in the south (600s) gave 700 and 100 peak counts in F673N and F631N respectively. Even considering the probable concentration of the light into sharper images, at least three times the total exposure is needed, especially if we are to reach the fainter features. The observing plan would be to make three exposures per orbit, all in the same filter, which would allow a total exposure time of 1800 s and good cosmic ray subtraction. The peak signal would then be about 2000 counts. If time is not available for both filter settings at each pointing, we would want to image both pointings in the F631N filter. As indicated in the figure in section 10, it is our intent to locate the south pointing so that the PC CCD includes both HH -203 and HH-204 (near PA=315D) and the north pointing so that all of the known Herbig-Haro objects fall within the field (PA=270D).
