Free format text (please update) Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects: they represent one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena; they may be used as probes of their environments; and they are unique probes of the early Universe. The size scales and brightness levels which HST can measure are ideally suited to the study of optical emission associated with the host galaxies of radio sources and anomalies such as jets and tidal debris. In Cycle 4 we began a PC continuum snapshot survey of the 3CR catalog to address the following: What are the host galaxy morphologies --- are there differences between FR-I and FR-II sources, nuclear cusps, tidal tails? How common are optical jets? Do optical continuum and radio structures align and is there detailed morphological correspondence? How common are dust-lanes and nuclear dust-discs, what is their orientation and morphology? Here we request time to continue/complete our broad-band survey and to extend it to OII Lambda 3727 observations of the strong emission line objects with z < 1.4 using the ramp filters. These observations will map the distribution of circumnuclear ionized gas, identify where jets and gas interact, and find gas disks, filaments and tidal tails. The images will provide unique information about radio galaxies and their evolving environments, and the project will produce an extremely valuable archival database on one of the most studied samples in history and a major resource for the astronomical community. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: sectionObservations The sample definition is the revised 3C as defined by Bennet (1962a,b), 298 sources. All sources have been identified optically, and redshifts measured for all but two, Spinrad (1985), Djorgovski et al. (1988). The completeness properties are discussed by Laing, Riley and Longair (1985). The sample has a maximum redshift of 2.54, the median redshift of the radio galaxies is 0.27, and the 3CR spans nearly five orders of magnitude in radio luminosity (10^41 - 10^46 ergs/sec). For exposure times using the F702W filter of 10 minutes, with guide star acquisition and CR- SPLIT, we calculate a 5Sigma limiting magnitude of V ~ 25.3, using a typical sky brightness from the WFPC2 Instrument Handbook and a readout noise of 6.6 electrons (which is the quadratic sum of the readout noise and `quantization noise' from the analogue to digital conversion) and taking into account the empirically observed PC PSF. For isophotal measurements at 2Sigma per pixel, we would go to levels of Mu_V ~ 22 --- 23 mag.arcsec^-2, typically somewhat fainter than the surface brightness at the half-light radius of an elliptical galaxy. These sensitivities are such that we obtain good detections on all targets. To perform the narrow- band observations, we will use the appropriate LRF filter, adjusted according to the redshift of the target. (Normally this means the target falls on the WFC rather than the PC.) For a typical source at redshift z~ 0.5, with exposures of ~ 15 min., we calculate a surface brightness to produce an S/N ~ 3 per pixel of 1.6* 10^-15 erg.s^-1.cm^-2.arcsec^-2. This is well within the expected range of interest and indicates that the relatively short exposures of a `snapshot' mode will produce extremely valuable scientific results. sectionThe Program to Date As of August 1994, we have observed just over 100 targets. The number of targets observed per month has been decreasing steadily since the March/April peak. Anticipating a plateau of between five and ten targets per month for the remainder of the Cycle, this would leave us with around 100 targets yet to observe. Together with the ~ 100 3CR sources known to have strong emission lines, we request snapshots for a total of 200 objects, to be divided approximately equally between these two modes of observation, and obviously according to which ones have and have not been observed in Cycle 4. At a comparable rate in Cycle 5 we will have a real chance of achieving statistical completeness. sectionPersonnel The scientific expertise of the team we have assembled covers essentially all aspects of the problems identified above, and the members of the team have a proven record of working succesfully both in this and related fields, and of working with HST imaging data. Some members of our team have already been heavily involved in the determination and analysis of the optical properties of the 3CR survey specifically, and are intimately familiar with its content, while both they and the others offer expertise in the physics of radio sources in general and in the optical properties of radio galaxies, and related objects such as powerful IRAS galaxies. This experience will be important in drawing together rapidly the disparate databases involved in the statistical comparisons we wish to make. The applicants also have strong technical expertize in the use of HST for imaging work. The PI has worked as Instrument Scientist at STScI for each of the FOC, WF/PC and WFPC2, for example. Much of the data will provide a basis for the Ph.D thesis of Ms. Sigrid De Koff, a Leiden student, who begins work at Baltimore on 6 September 1994. Because of this, we wish to retain the one year proprietary period on this snapshot survey. Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: !
