Free format text (please update) Observations with HST of the intrinsic EUV spectrum of the up to now unique high-redshift QSO HS 1700+6416 has opened a new window of research: Quantitative abundance studies (C N O Ne .....) in the halos of early galaxies via high- redshift metal absorption line systems (OVI to OIII, NIII- NV, CIII, IV...); measurement of shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background; first study of HeI at high redshift. In the course of the Hamburg wide angle QSO surveys and subsequent IUE observations we have recently succeeded in discovering three more unabsorbed high-redshift (z = 2.12, 2.16, 2.41) QSOs which are even brighter than HS 1700+6416 in the UV, and thus ideal targets for HST. We propose to take GHRS G140 L LSA spectra for Lambda < 1700 Angstroem and FOS high resolution spectra for LambdaLambda 1700 - 3280 Angstroem with the aim (i) to measure C, N, O, Ne abundances in several LLSs and metal line systems in order to check and extend the results of enhanced O/C and Ne/C ratios (ii) to determine the shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background, in particular as a function of redshift (iii) to measure HeI 584, 537 as well as the HeI Gunn-Peterson effect more reliably (iii) to study the LyAlpha forest in the yet unexplored range 1 <= z <= 1.7 in three lines of sight (iv) to study the EUV energy distribution of QSOs and QSO emission lines for lambda_rest >= 360 Angstroem. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We want to take GHRS low resolution spectra in the range from 1150 Angstroem to 1650 Angstroem and FOS high resolution spectra (1650-3270 Angstroem) of the two UV bright high-redshift QSOs HS 1103+6416 and HS 1307+4716. The third QSO, HE 1122-1649, which is absorbed below 1530 Angstroem will be observed with the FOS above 1600 Angstroem only. Estimate of necessary exposure time and number of orbits: (All subsequent flux values have the unit erg/cm*cm/s/Angstroem) HS 1103+6416: This is an ideal CVZ target! With a flux between 0.5 and 2 E-15 in the range 2300 to 3200 Angstroem, a S/N of 30 can be reached in 15 minutes with FOS G270H at 2800 Angstroem and in 94 minutes at 2400 Angstroem (1 orbit). G190H requires 150 minutes for a typical flux of 1.5 E-15 for S/N=30 (2 orbits). GHRS G140L (LSA) spectra require 370 minutes (4 orbits) exposure time for 1150-1450 Angstroem (S/N=20) and a minimum of 330 minutes (4 orbits) for 1450-1750 Angstroem (S/N=10). Altogether 11 orbits are needed. HS 1307+4716 (Visibility 50 minutes): With comparable brightness as HS 1103 at 2800 Angstroem (G270H) and 4 times more flux at 2000 Angstroem (G190H), an S/N=30 is reached in the first case in 30 minutes (1 orbit) and in 100 minutes for G190H (2 orbits). For 1150-1450 Angstroem (flux between 3.5 and 2.5 E-15, GHRS G140L (LSA) requires 320 minutes for an S/N=20 which translates to 7 orbits, while the 1450 to 1750 Angstroem range requires 7 orbits for an S/N greater than 10. Altogether 17 orbits. HE 1122-1649 (visibility 53 minutes): As above with similar (or higher) fluxes as HS 1307+4716, the two FOS ranges require only 3 orbits to cover the wavelength range 1650 to 3270 Angstroem at S/N 30.
