Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: ! Free format text (please update) We propose to image three low-luminosity early-type galaxies (ETGs) with a kinematically decoupled core (KDC), namely NGC 2434, NGC 7192 and IC 4889. We will image the three galaxies with WFPC2 in the three passbands F450W, F555W and F814W, centered at 4445 Angstrom, 5252 Angstrom, and 8269 Angstrom, respectively. These multi-band exposures will be used to derive optical-optical twodimensional color maps. We intend to investigate: 1) the presence of unresolved point--like sources in these cores, and their colors; 2) the global morphology of these anomalous stellar cores; 3) the relationship between their morphology and the morphology of the dust - if any; 4) any positional dependence of the stellar population properties; 5) the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the stellar population in these cores. Our final aim is to compare the results we will obtain for the KDCs in low-luminosity ETGs with those already found by HST for i) low-luminosity ETGs with ``regular'' core kinematics; ii) high-luminosity ellipticals with KDCs. Anomalies - or similarities - of our targets with respect to the comparison galaxies will provide important insight into the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will obtain broad band F450W, F555W and F814W images for all three target objects. For NGC 2434 and NGC 7192 we will integrate 1200 seconds in F555W, 800 seconds in F814W, and 1900 seconds in F450W. For IC 4889, we will integrate 600 seconds in F555W, 600 seconds in F814W, and 800 seconds in F450W. Our ground based images show that these exposures guarantee at least 1E4 counts per pixel in the center, since the central V band magnitude observed from the ground are in the range 15.5 to 16.5. These exposure times have been computed following eq (6.1) and tables 6.1 and 6.2 of the WFPC2 manual version May 1994. Since the total background including CCD readout, dark current, and sky will in all cases be comparable to or smaller than 100 counts per pixel, the above exposures will guarantee the required S/N of 100. The WFPC2 broad band images will be obtained with the galaxy centered on PC1. All WFPC2 exposures for NGC 2434 and 7192 will be taken with the CR split. No CR split will be done for IC 4889. Number of orbits: We will observe one galaxy per orbit, for a total of three orbits. Two of the three galaxies (NGC 2434 and NGC 7192) can be observed in the CVZ, therefore their visibility is 96 minutes per orbit. IC 4889 has a visibility of 59 minutes. The exposure times given above refer to the effective "on--source" integration times during the relative orbit. The overheads within each orbit are not included in these exposure times, but have been properly taken into account by RPS2. Real_Time_Justification: NGC 2434 and NGC 7192 should be observed in the continuous- viewing-zone. No overlap with other HST observations. Calibration_Justification: !
