Free format text (please update) Following a successful HST pilot project, we propose to study the continuum and Ly Alpha morphologies for a sample of 20 z > 2 radio galaxies. During the pilot project ultraviolet continua were detected from two of the most distant galaxies known, 4C 41.17 at z = 3.8 and 4C 28.58 at z = 2.9. The HST morphologies show multiple small-scale (~ 0.1") clumps which in 4C 41.17 are closely associated with the radio source. These results (i) constrain the nature of distant radio galaxies, (ii) imply that spatial scales in distant radio galaxies are well suited for mapping with the HST and (iii) provide compelling arguments for enlarging the sample., Our 20 new targets have been chosen from 50 candidates to be bright in both continuum and Ly Alpha. We would image all 20 in the continuum and 5 of them in Ly Alpha through the appropriate linear ramp filters. The observations would elucidate sub- kiloparsec-scale structures in the target galaxies, allowing study of their alignment and relationships to the associated radio sources. Of particular interest is a comparison between the HST clumpiness and the recently discovered spatially- extended absorption systems in the Ly Alpha profiles. The project would provide unique information relevant to the formation and evolution of radio galaxies, to relationships between galaxy and quasar activity and to physical conditions in the early Universe. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The considerable differences between the two objects already studied, coupled with the need to disentangle the many effects and various parameters discussed above provide compelling arguments for imaging a sizeable sample of distant radio galaxies with the HST, both in the continuum and in Ly Alpha., , noindent Continuum Imaging. We shall image 20 radio galaxies known to have z > 2, R - magnitude < 23.5 and Ly Alpha fluxes > 10^ -15 erg s^ -1 cm^ -2 . Our choice of filter is dictated by three criteria. First bright lines (Ly Alpha) should be excluded from the pass band. Second, the filters should result in as large as possible detected light signal. Third, the rest-wavelengths should be as similar as possible over the redshift range. As a reasonable compromise between these criteria, we shall observe all z < 2.9 galaxies through F606W, the most efficient filter. For the eight z > 2.9 radio galaxies, Ly Alpha contamination will be avoided by observing through F702W. , * The PC is preferable as a detector to the WFC. Although the signal per pixel will be smaller for the PC, averaging the signal over 4.7 pixels should result in similar sampling to the WFC with very slightly degraded signal to noise. However, we regard the additional spatial resolution provided by the better sampling as a significant advantage. Our targets are all small compared with the field of the PC. , * We request an average exposure time per object of 2 orbits per target based on the following considerations. Our Cycle 1 (aberrated) exposures were each of length about 6 x 30m. Both 4C 41.17 and 4C 28.58 contained two or more 0.1" clumps, each of which produced more than 10\ flux from these galaxies (less than 2.5 magnitudes fainter than the integrated galaxy magnitudes). Assume that all the targets have similar ratios of flux in clumpy structures and that we wish to observe galaxies down to integrated R-magnitudes < 23.5 (1.5 magnitudes fainter than 4C 41.17). For a 40m minute exposure through the F606W filter with PC1, a 26th mag clump will produce 564 electrons per 0.1" by 0.1" PSF (60\ resultant signal-to-noise per PSF after 2 orbits is about 25. Most of the targets are 0.5 to 1.5 mag brighter than R = 23.5., , (ii) Ly Alpha Imaging: An instrumental addition which is particularly important for this project is the narrow-band capability provided by the linear ramp filters on WFPC2. These filters were proposed to the WFPC2 team by Koo and Miley (1987). They have a 1\ bandwidth over a 13'' region and are therefore optimized for studying emission-line gas in distant galaxies. They provide a new exciting possibility for imaging the sub-nuclear Ly Alpha emission. , ,Because the linear ramp filters are a relatively untested facility, we shall restrict the Ly Alpha imaging during Cycle 5 to only five objects, with the intention of completing the Ly Alpha survey in subsequent cycles. To maximise the detectability, we have selected the five galaxies with the brightest Ly Alpha at z > 2.6. This emphasises the most sensitive wavelength region of the system (> 4300 A) and the most distant objects. It includes objects such as 0943-242 at z = 2.9, known to have deep Lyman Alpha absorption (Fig. 4). On the basis of these observations we shall request further narrow-band observations in Cycle 6. Use of the linear ramp filters restricts us to the WFC .If the linear ramp filters do not function properly, we would carry out observations of suitable targets through broader band conventional filters which include Ly Alpha , , * We request an exposure time of 3 orbits for each object. Typical Ly Alpha fluxes for the galaxies are 3 x 10^ -15 erg s^ -1 cm^ -2. If the Ly Alpha is as clumpy as the continuum, there should be at least two 0.1" clumps per object, each containing more than 10\ total flux. For one 30- minute exposure through LRF 2 FR533N at 4948 A, a 3 x 10^ -16 erg s^ -1 cm^ -2 clump, will produce 200 electrons per PSF. The signal-to-noise per 0.1"x 0.1" PSF after 3 x 30m is about 30. , , The total amount of on-target time requested is 55 orbits. In order to plan for follow-up observations, we regard it important that all observations be carried out in Cycle 5. However, if the observations are spread over Cycles 5 and 6, we request that at least 35 orbits be allocated in Cycle 5. The ramp filter observations should be carried out early so that they can be evaluated and used to select additional observations. Real_Time_Justification: None Our proposal builds on several years of preparatory ground- based programs. We have access to a huge body of relevant data including:, (i) optical images and spectra (Kitt Peak, La Silla, Tololo, Las Campanas, Lick, La Palma), (ii) Ly Alpha spectral profiles with a resolution of better than 100 km/s. , (iii) 2.2 micron images (UKIRT, Las Campanas), (iv) radio maps of the total intensity and polarisations at several frequencies and resolutions (VLA, MERLIN interferometric array at Jodrell Bank) These ground-based data (particularly comparable resolution radio maps)will be carefully compared with the HST data. Note that our HST images are comparable in resolution to the best VLA maps, For the first time they allow detailed comparisons between radio and optical morphologies to be made on the kiloparsec scale., Some of us have begun a programme to study the targets with the Keck Telescope and we intend to follow up the HST observations spectroscopically with Keck., , One of us (HR) is involved with WFPC2 observations of a complete sample of z~ 1 radio galaxies to be carried out during Cycle 4 (PI M. Longair). A "low-z" control sample will therefore be available to allow evolutionary effects to be studied., , Two of us are (WvB,GM) are involved with WFPC2 imaging of a similar sample of z > 2 quasars to be carried out in Cycle 4. (PI M. Lehnert). Calibration_Justification: ! Move appropriate text from Real_Time_Justification Additional_Comments: Fixed_Targets !
