Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: Many active galactic nuclei channel energetic particles into jets that feed powerful extended lobes of radio emission; others remain quite compact. Both classes of active galaxies are suspected to be powered gravitationally by the accretion of surrounding material onto a massive black hole. Convincing evidence of this has now been found with HST for the prototype of the jet-producing galaxies, M87, in the form of a bright rapidly rotating nuclear gaseous disk. Here we propose to search for similar mass-measuring disks in compact AGN without jets. We will use the WFPC2 with narrow band filters or the LRF and F547M to make H alpha images of bright Liners with powerful compact flat-spectrum radio sources. Several lines of evidence already suggest that these galaxies may contain rapidly rotating nuclear accretion disks, replenished by gas moving in toward the nucleus: broad emission lines and wings of H alpha emission; 21 cm red-shifted absorption lines; and observations and models of stellar motions which indicate a large central mass. If nuclear disks are found, we will request FOS observations in subsequent cycles to measure their kinematics. In addition to searching for nuclear disks, we will use the H alpha images to study the emission-line regions of these galaxies, in combination with high resolution radio maps, to learn about the evolution and interaction of the hot gas and the relativistic plasma, and to try to determine why these AGN seem unable to produce jets. Questions Observing_Description: CR-split H alpha+NII on-band images will be taken of each galaxy with the F658N filter or the F673N filter when these match the redshift. Otherwise, we will use the Linear Ramp Filter, positioning the nucleus on the LRF at the position that transmits H alpha+NII. CR-split off-band images of each galaxy will be made using the F547M filter, which is free of strong emission lines at these redshifts. The off-band images will be used to subtract the stellar continuum from the on- band images. The exposure times are based on our HST images of M87. The exposures discussed in Ford et al. (1994) were 400s + 400s through the F547M filter and 1300s + 1400s through the F658N filter with the PC of WFPC2. The final continuum-subtracted HAlpha image shows the structure of the nuclear disk, including ''spiral arms'', and the structure of complex filaments joined to the disk very clearly at full resolution. With modest smoothing, it shows how these structures merge with faint extended structures. For the purposes of the present proposal, less detailed images are required. We need to determine the apparent major axis of any central disk, for future kinematic observations with the FOS, and to see the orientation and general morphology of gas extending beyond the central disk for comparison with the radio images. One orbit per galaxy, rather than the two used for M87, should be adequate. Two of the galaxies, with radial velocities of 6200 kms and 7600 kms, are noticeably more distant than the rest of the sample, which has v < 4400 kms. In terms of resolution, their greater distance is compensated for by the fact that they can be observed with the PC + F673N, rather than with the WF + LRF. The exposure times, within one orbit for each galaxy, will typically be 7 minutes with F547M and 23 minutes with the LRF (or slightly longer with F658N or F673N). Real_Time_Justification: None.
