From: sembach@sundoggie.mit.edu Proposal_Information Title: FOS Observations of Ionized Gas in Two Early-Type Galaxies Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: Galaxies & Clusters Cycle: 5 Investigators PI_name: Claude Canizares PI_Institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology CoI_Name: Kenneth Sembach CoI_Institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Contact: Y CoI_Name: Giuseppina Fabbiano CoI_Institution: Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Contact: N Abstract: We will obtain Faint Object Spectrograph G130H (1150--1600 Angstrom) spectra of NGC 4472 (M49) and NGC 4486 (M87) to determine the amount of intermediate temperature (~10^5 K) gas in the cooling flows and interstellar media of these early -type galaxies. Both galaxies have large amounts of hot (~10^7 K) gas, and NGC 4486 has a strong cooling flow associated with the Virgo cluster. NGC 4472 is a relatively isolated Virgo elliptical with a galactic cooling flow. Intermediate ionization gas traced by species such as Si IV, C IV, and N V is common in the Milky Way and QSO absorption line systems and should be present in early-type galaxies as well given their large hot gas content and apparently complex ISM. The proposed observations will have resolutions of approximately 200 km/sec and S/N = 15 (NGC 4472) and 35 (NGC 4486). By combining the FOS observations with spectral information at X-ray wavelengths from the ASCA satellite, we will be able to study the gas-phase conditions in these galaxies over a wide range of temperatures (~10^4-10^7 K). Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will observe NGC 4472 and NGC 4486 in FOS high-resolution mode using the G130H grating. The observations will have a resolution of approximately 200 km/sec (FWHM) at 1500 Angstroms and S/N = 15 (NGC 4472) and 35 (NGC 4486) per resolution element (1 diode). The FOS observations will be obtained in the 0.2"x1.7" slit aperture to preserve the full spectroscopic resolution provided by the aperture with COSTAR optics (FWHM=0.99+/-0.1 Angstroms/diode). The integration for each object will provide full spectral coverage over the wavelength interval from 1150 to 1606 A. The data will be obtained in ACCUM mode. Fluxes are estimated from Oke, Bertola, & Capaccioli (1981, ApJ, 243, 453). No previous exposures of these objects at these wavelengths exist in the HST archives. Due to the factor of 2 error in the exposure time calculation process given in the FOS instrument handbook (Version 5.0), we have decided to concentrate our awarded time solely on the brighter of the two objects (NGC 4486). Two visits will be required. Real_Time_Justification: No special scheduling requirements are necessary. Calibration_Justification: No special scheduling requirements are necessary. Additional_Comments: No additional comments at this time. Fixed_Targets !
