Free format text (please update) The stellar luminosity function derived from nearby stars (r < ~ 10 pc.) is flat for M_v >= 12, while results based on photometric surveys of more distant stars show an order of magnitude fewer stars at M_v > 14 than at the peak (M_v ~ +12). The two main hypotheses postulated to account for this difference are either small-number statistics locally, or that the "missing" lower-luminosity stars are hidden as unresolved companions in the latter samples. We propose to use the unparalleled resolution of HST to discriminate between these hypotheses through a SNAPSHOT survey of stars in a complete sample of late-type M-dwarfs drawn from photometric surveys. Allowing for the distribution of semi-major axes and inclination effects, we expect to detect at least 40 % of the binaries in our sample, which has an effective distance limit of 100 parsecs. With a dynamic range of over 5 magnitudes at 8000 Angstrom, these observations will provide the first direct determination of the effect of binary stars on the derivation of the stellar luminosity function. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Exposure times have been calculated based on the information in the WFPC2 handbook. We have chosen to use the F850LP filter since the longer effective wavelength provides a significant advantage in detecting potential very low-mass companions. Note that all of these stars have I-band photometry, providing the standardised calibration requested by the TAC. The throughput of the F850LP filter is listed as 0.47 percent which implies a count rate of 13,000 electrons per second for a of I=12. The PSF given for the PC indicates that 15-25 % lies within the central pixel. Image-quality is important as we are searching for binary companions, so IMAGE mode (with guide-star acquisition) is appropriate for this project. Multiple exposures are requested both to allow detection of fainter companions and to deal with cosmic ray hits. All these observations are part of a survey aimed at determining statistical properties of M-dwarf binaries - hence, our results will only become apparent towards the end of the project. We therefore request the usual one-year proprietary data rights. Real_Time_Justification: No special requirements. 1) Optical Spectroscopy: We will obtain spectroscopic data for all of the stars in our sample using the Palomar 60" and 200" telescopes. This will allow us to measure the radial velocity, estimate ages (based on the space motions and H Alpha strength, if the latter is in emission) and measure luminosity-dependent molecular features. 2) Speckle Observations: we are currently (in collaboration with A. Ghez (UCLA) & G. Neugebauer(CIT)) using IR speckle techniques to search for binaries amongst the 170 brightest (V < 10.5) Hyades stars. As part of this programme, we will also observe the 7 brightest stars in the current sample. Calibration_Justification: !
