Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: We propose to observe 5 fields along the NE spiral arm region of NGC224 (M31) with the WFPC-2 using the F160BW, F336W, F439W, and F555W filters to obtain high quality color-magnitude diagrams of the sites of recent star formation. With the high resolution and far UV image capabilities of HST, we will be able to detect the main sequence down to M_V ~ 0.0, and make useful determinations of the temperatures of even the hottest stars. These data will allow us to study the global pattern of the star formation and explore the current descriptions of star formation processes. We will also be able to study the variations of the IMF from location to location along the spiral arm. Finally, these data will be vital for efforts to improve the calibration of the far UV color to temperature calibration for M31. Questions Observing_Description: We propose to take F160BW, F336W (U), F439W (B), and F555 (V) images of 5 fields with exposure times of 560, 440, 160, and 140 seconds respectively. We have split the F160BW and F336W exposures into a long and a short exposure, with the second exposure offset from the field center. This is to 1) avoid CR problems 2) allow elimination of hot pixels, 3) allow for correcting the undersampling of the pixels, and 4) increase the dynamic range of the total exposures. We have chosen these four filters in order to make a useful determination of the temperatures of the stars. For the hottest (and brightest) stars, the Far-UV data is necessary to determine the temperature. For the moderately hot and moderately faint stars, the F255 - V color is sufficient. For the faintest, and coolest stars we hope to detect (spectral type B5V), the B-V color will be sufficient to determine the temperature. We have also chosen this set of four filters to allow for a determination of the extinction to the OB associations.
