Y or N (designate at most one contact) Abstract: We propose WFPC2 observations that will provide color- magnitude diagrams reaching to below the main-sequence turnoffs in 7 of the oldest star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)Null. These data will allow a direct comparison of the ages of these clusters with those of Milky Way globular clusters. The primary goals are: a) to determine if the initial bursts of star formation occurred at the same time in both galaxies, and b) to determine if all of the clusters in the LMC with Fe/H<-1.7 have the same ages (indicating that the first epoch of star formation in the LMC occurred during a free-fall collapse), or if they have a range in ages (indicating a non-monolithic collapse or possibly a series of mergers that formed the LMC)Null. Our Cycle 4 observations of globular clusters in the outer halo of the Milky Way demonstrate that the proposed LMC observations are straightforward for HST, even though impossible from the ground. For the first time, we be able to make a direct comparison of the ages of the ancestral components of two galaxies of widely differing mass and Hubble type. Questions Observing_Description: The observing program will be a straightforward series of WFPC2 exposures, in the standard HST V (F555W) and I (F814W) filters, on seven globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observing strategy is based on the precision actually achieved in our Cycle 4 observations of distant Galactic globular clusters, and the LMC exposure times are directly scaled from the Cycle 4 program. We have found that it is sufficient to observe only a single WFPC2 field, with the PC chip located at the center of the cluster, in order to measure enough stars to attain our program goals. Note also that we will continue to use small pointing offsets (of order 1.67 WF pixels) between individual exposures to allow us to overcome undersampling problems in the three WF chips. This proposal makes extremely efficient use of HST because 6 of the 7 targets lie in the continuous viewing zone. Our observing plan will produce data matching the excellent quality of the Cycle 4 observations of Pal 4 and NGC 2419. We thus arrive at the following exposure sequence (with overhead factored in, and filling out the integer number of orbits with extra exposure time) for each of the six targets lying in the CVZNull. A 96-minute visibility period per orbit and no guide-star re-acquisitions are assumed. Orbit 1. Initial guide-star acquisition, followed by two 260-sec exposures in F555W, two 260-sec exposures in F814W, three 1000-sec exposures in F555W (the third extends into to Orbit 2) and four 1000 second exposures in F814W. For the one remaining cluster, which is not in the CVZ, we have 59 minutes of visibility per orbit. This one target therefore requires 3 orbits, as follows: Orbit 1. Initial guide-star aquisition, followed by one 260-sec exposure in F555W, two 260-sec exposures in F814W and one 1100-sec exposure in F814W. Orbit 2. Two 800-sec and one 700-sec exposures in F814W, Orbit 3: two 800-sec exposures and one 700-sec exposure in F55W. The entire program thus requires 15 orbits. Real_Time_Justification: Six of our seven targets are in the continuous-viewing zone. This program therefore takes very significant advantage of the increased HST efficiency that comes from using the CVZ. We have an ongoing battery of ground-based programs in support of this project: 1. As we did for our Cycle 4 outer- halo Galactic globular clusters, we will observe the target clusters from the ground during the same observing runs when we are establishing fiducial V, V-I CMD studies of near-halo clusters. This will allow a self-consistent calibration of the entire set of clusters now being observed as part of our comprehensive halo- and LMC-ages program. 2. A large number of clusters with R_G between 5 and 50 kpc have been, or will be, observed in V and I from the ground to establish the basis for our age survey of the Galactic and LMC halos. 3. The stellar-evolution and stellar-atmosphere models on which we depend are constantly being improved.
