Free format text (please update) The mechanism that determines the pattern of depletion of elements in the interstellar medium has been a problem for a long time. It is clear that some of the most refractory elements such as Si, Fe, and Mg, are heavily depleted onto the interstellar grains. On the other hand, some elements such as S and Zn are normally either undepleted or very lightly depleted. The difference between the two cases is not understood. We propose to address this question with a detailed study of the depletion patterns in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud. This study is strongly based on a combination of the capabilities of two modern instruments: the GHRS for high- resolution UV data, and the Ultra High Resolution Facility (UHRF) of the AAT. This instrument has been used to obtain Na I line profiles in the Rho Oph cloud with a resolution of R=1,000,000. The combination of these two types of data will be used to resolve the velocity structure of the element depletions in the cloud. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Several target stars have been selected in the Rho Oph cloud for study. These targets exhibit a considerable range in extinction (from E_B-V=0.16 for HD143275 to E_B-V=0.48 for Rho Oph itself), as well as some remarkably different grain extinction properties. Since the project is looking for patterns of depletions, then this range in line-of-sight characteristics is highly desirable. For each target, 11 absorption lines from 5 ions are sought. These are: Zn II 2026 and 2062 Angstrom; S II 1250, 1253, and 1259 Angstrom; Si II 1808 Angstrom; Fe II 1608, 2374, and 2586 Angstrom; and Mg II 1239, 1240 Angstrom doublet. The highest possible resolution is sought, so that the Echelle mode will be employed on both sides. Most of the target stars are very bright, so that very high S/N can be achieved. For these targets, only two-three orbits are needed; the occultation time will be used for switching from the ECH-A to the ECH-B mode. Only Rho Oph itself needs exposure times longer than this; we estimate that 4 orbits on this target will get S/N ratios between 100 and 150 for all lines. Move appropriate text from Real_Time_Justification Additional_Comments: The supporting observations, consisting of super high resolution Na I profiles for the target stars in the Rho Oph cloud, have already been completed for four stars in the cloud (Rho Oph = HD147933, Sigma Sco = HD147165, and Delta Sco = HD143275, and PI Sco = HD143018). Similar data from the AAT will be sought for additional stars in the cloud for future study. In addition, one of us (TPS) is a Guest Investigator with the Hipparcos astrometric mission for the purpose of obtaining accurate parallaxes of the stars in the Rho Oph cloud. These data, already obtained, will become available in 1995 or 1996, and will allow us to develop a three-dimensional map of the star locations within the cloud. It will be extremely useful to combine this with the data on cloud structure and physical processes to be obtained from the proposed HST observations. !
