Free format text (please update) We propose to obtain GHRS 15 km/s resolution G160M integrations of highly ionized gas absorption (N V and CIV) toward PKS2155-304 and NGC5548 in order to continue our HST program to study highly ionized gas in the unexplored outer Galactic halo. The spectral integrations are planned to also provide important low ionization measurements of absorption by Mg II, S II, and Si II. The data will be used to study such questions as: What are the physical properties of gas in the outer Galaxy halo? Does the Galaxy have a highly ionized outer boundary? What are the ionization processes occurring in the outer Galaxy halo? Does the Galaxy have a high velocity cloud phenomenon detectable in high ionization lines? What are the relationships between the high ionization and low ionization absorption? What is the relationship between absorption occurring in the outer Galaxy halo and that seen in quasar absorption line systems at low and high redshift? Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will use the GHRS and the Large Science Aperture to obtain G160M observations of two AGN targets in the ACCUM mode. The first target is PKS 2155-304 for which a G160M integration centered at 1538 A (covering the wavelength region 1521-1554 A) will be taken with two orbits. The second target is NGC 5548 for which we will take two G160M integrations. The first integration will be centered at 1250 A (covering the wavelength region 1233-1268 A) with 2 orbits, and the second integration will be centered at 1538 A (ie, identical setup as for PKS 2155-304) with 4 orbits. All measurements will be obtained with the step pattern 4, which provides two samplings per diode width. The standard FP-split and comb-addition scanning sequence will be used to reduced photocathode and detector window fixed pattern noise. Real_Time_Justification: Not applicable Calibration_Justification: We request Pt wavelength calibration lamp exposures be taken at the beginning of each object integration in order to obtain precise wavelength calibrations. Accurate wavelength calibrations are crucial to our scientific analyses because we will compare the detailed profiles of different absorption lines. Additional_Comments: no additional comments.
